Excellent! I hadn't thought of that.

It somehow counts I guess. :-) Do you happen to know whether he used that line in one of the official releases of live recordings?

It's definitely in the Live in London release & I think it's in Songs From The Road. I don't remember for sure if it's in Live in Dublin. I'll check it out sometime soon & let you know. I agree that it should count :) .

Now I wasn't even thinking about this game and just about to walk out the door when this song entered my head - Field Commander Cohen :)

Yes, you're right, of course.

Now only one song is missing. - And it's the tricky one.

I suddenly remembered (& also listened to it to make sure) that in Songs From The Road, Leonard sings the "don't cry no more. . ." verse instead of the "beggar. . .crutch" verse, so he does not sing his name in that one; (& thank goodness we have an official live recording of the song with that verse in it!) And Leonard most definitely sings his name in the Live in Dublin release (as well as the Live in London release). So there's your answer, Harmut :) .

Hartmut, the name Jikan has been translated a few different ways, but if you take Jikan to mean "silence" (which is one of the translations mentioned), then maybe you're thinking of: To A Teacher, & the line: "Hurt once & for all into silence" (?).

You're the best, really.

I didn't occur to me to translate the name. - But I don't think he was referring to himself by the word 'silence'. So I don't think that really counts.

Yes, that occurred to me, that it wouldn't apply because he wasn't referring to himself; so I agree that it shouldn't count. . .but thank you for being so appreciative - you are so kind. . .& so polite! :)

I remembered that Leonard sings his name (first & last name) in an improvised song in the BOTW documentary. Is that what you have in mind, Hartmut?

Yes, exactly.

'Mr. Cohen Must Be Going'.

That means every song on my list has been 'discovered'.

So we can move on to the next question. Unless somebody can come up with another 'name song' that I have missed ...

Just for the record (& for the sake of accuracy):

The improvised song I was referring to, that is recorded in Tony Palmer's "Bird On A Wire" film, is the "Broken-Down Nightingale" song, which begins: "Leonard Cohen is going to sing a song of anguish & despair. . ."

The song "Mr. Cohen Must Be Going" is an improv from a concert in Paris in 1974; it's not on any officially released recording, so I think that means it wouldn't count for the purpose of this list. . .(?)

Oh, ok. Very interesting. Thank you. I had forgotten about that. Or maybe I never knew about it ... But that's great, now we have one more song for the list. That's what I was hoping for when I asked the question: That the lot of us can come up with more songs than I alone.

Hm ... I think it should count. Not just because I say so now. :-) But because in the initial question I didn't specify that the songs need to appear on official recordings.

Your saying so would be enough for me! But it's very dutiful of you to back up your determination with logical & valid cause. So that's settled - it counts :) .

I think Bev should be the one to pose the next question, if she is around, since she named most of the songs in the list. Are you there, Bev?
