My only regret is that the festival in South Carolina is presenting
The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny by Kurt Weill and it's rarely
performed, and I always wanted to see it.

But I'll pass on that for a Leonard siting and to see you folks any time!

Excellent! We can be gob-slobs out-loud proud. You bringing Mrs. K.? Hope so. The more the mixier. And, speaking of Mrs. K., I can see why that poem made her weep. It cuts quick to the heart of the matter. You ought to post more poems, John K. You're very good at nailing a line or a few.

BoHo
p.s. Evelyn, I'd hate to miss the Kurt Weill performance (he and BB did, after all, give Bobby Darin his greatest hit which seems to be all over the threads on the Forum these daze); idly wondering out loud if Lizzy drove north and collected you in SC, well, if the two of you couldn't Thelma and Louise through Motown into The Big Choke . . . Maybe Lizzy has more thoughts on this? It'd save your both a few pennies, though, I bet, if possible (unless, of course, it's cheaper to book ABC than one-way flights in the US, eh?)

Hi BoHo :D ~

Actually, Evelyn is in New York most of the time and I can get a flight from Orlando to Lansing, Michigan for $99 one-way... just a few hours vs. 3 days and MUCH less than gas would be, even with splitting it. I don't want to push it with my driving my $300.00 car, bought a couple weeks prior to the New York Event and driven from Florida to New York to Michigan and back to Florida. It has stood me SO very well, that I wouldn't want to chance it at this point. Flying is going to work much better for me.

NOW... if I had more time available [that I didn't mind using that much for road time vs. seeing my Mom, my friend Claire, you, Toronto gathering, and Hydra... and it's going to be crowded, as it is, just doing those half decently]; if I had an economical and newer vehicle; I couldn't get a cheap flight anyway; and Evelyn was for sure going to be in S.C.; I'd be more than happy to collect her there and keep going :D . It's so hard to coordinate with others' schedules, as it is... and I'm going to have all I can do to manage this trip, with the time I have.

SO... it's a great idea, if only circumstances were different, and thanks for coming up with it. I never would've thought of it; perhaps, because I'm so focused on making all this happen, period  .

I'll be glad to see Evelyn when I get there, though :D .

Love,
Lizzy

Hi Dick ~

And, in this case, support translates to presence.

The Voice awaits 8) ... even, recorded, it would remain the same... yet, quantum leaps, flips, and twirls mid-air, to hear it for real... again... Be for Real... what's to say to that? Simply want to listen and hear... and see.

Love,
Lizzy

World artists to touch down in Toronto for Luminato festival
Last Updated: Tuesday, February 13, 2007 | 9:12 PM ET CBC Arts

Leonard Cohen, Philip Glass, Eric Idle and Atom Egoyan are among the internationally renowned artists set to take part in Toronto's upcoming arts festival Luminato, organizers announced Monday.

Festival CEO Janice Price announced a wide-ranging slate of events spanning the worlds of dance, music, visual arts, film, theatre and literature. Luminato events will roll out across at venues downtown Toronto June 1-10. "As a creative renaissance unfolds in our city, we have united to produce what is certainly a festival of global scale and distinction," Price said in a statement.

As previously announced, the festival will feature Auroras/Testimony, a video portrait exhibition by Egoyan and Turkish artist Kutlug Ataman, and the world premiere of Idle's original oratorio Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy), a work inspired by Monty Python's Life of Brian. The light-hearted work, which was co-commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, will be conducted by Peter Oundjian, the TSO's musical director and Idle's cousin.

Oscar-nominated composer Glass will join forces with Cohen for an original concert work based on the poet-musician's collection Book of Longing. Glass is slated to perform along with an instrumental ensemble, vocalists and Cohen as narrator.
(Don’t be mislead by the sound of that … current plans are for using a tape, and LC does NOT plan to attend, let alone recite.)

Still --- Other major Luminato events will include:
· An Evening of Glenn Gould, a new play written by the iconic pianist's friend, Toronto filmmaker John McGreevy.

Irving Invectus, a look at the life and work of poet Irving Layton.

Vida!, a new performance piece by famed Havana-based dance troupe Danza Cuba.
· Carnivalissima, a celebration of carnival traditions around the world.
· Spiegeltent, a nightly show inspired by the cabarets of 1920s Europe.
· Floating Artworks, an exhibition of works by Max Streicher and other artists shown suspended from public spaces such as Union Station.
· Norman, a film-live theatre collaboration honouring the life of Canadian filmmaker Norman McLaren.

Luminato's kick-off weekend will also include celebrations tied to the opening of the Royal Ontario Museum's new crystalline expansion and a program of authors' readings, lectures, panels, public workshops and open houses.

Toronto City Summit Alliance is planning the $10 million festival. While Toronto is home to dozens of festivals all year long, Luminato is seen as a larger, more international event that will draw artists from across North America and the world.

some good news-- I made a phone call to Toronto this morning and
Harry Rasky and wife Arelene say they will be thrilled to meet with fans of Leonard Cohen for dinner, and maybe a movie.

Also adds to our attendance list.. ANIA from down under, and Jack Bowerman, and most likely, Eva Poola.

Am excited as hell about this event!

EXCELLENT ~ Ania at Last 8) !! I remember Eva, too, from New York ~ perhaps, the first one I recognized immediately, in the registration area, just from her photo. It'll be great to see her, again! I don't recall any interactions [if there would be a reason to] with Jack Bowerman... :?

This is really turning into a great big deal, isn't it BD 8) ? Dinner with Andre... Dinner with Arelene and Rasky :D !

Hi All,

Because of Illuminato Festival guest rooms appear to be at quite a premium. I wasn't able to negotiate a group rate for us without promising my first born child. Discussed hotels with quite a few people and the concensus seems to be that the Delta Chelsea would be a reasonable, well-located choice. Dick and Linda have already made their reservation and report that there are no "standard" rooms left-only "deluxe." Good news is that they still have a fairly reasonable cancellation policy-4 PM day of arrival.

Here is link to their website:

http://www.deltahotels.com/hotels/hotels.php?hotelId=10

Dick & I also discussed tickets for the Glass performances and we are probably going to attend on June 1st. Group tickets would be too hard to manage so again-suggest everyone make their own arrangements. Some folks in Toronto have promised to let us know as soon as tickets go on sale (rumour is late March). We will post as soon as we know for sure. Still working on rest of schedule, but we're thinking that we would like to see the new Eric Idle play also and that would probably be on June 2nd.

All reports are that Leonard is not coming to Toronto so we can all relax and enjoy each others company! Hope to see many of you there.

Joe
