I remember as a small kid our family vacationing to Canada and being excited about going to a foreign country. The signs kept saying Canada ahead and you are leaving the USA but when we got to the border all that was there was this guy in a mountie hat standing in a small hut waving at us as we drove under a thin log archway.

Now leapfrog about 3 years ago and I'm waiting at the Vancouver B.C.
border with a few friends going to a tournament. The Driver of our trip Brian was a guy from California who had parrot blue hair and dressed like a surfer dude. They had a border patrolman walking up and down the waiting vehicles and when he saw Brian he took a triple take . Immediately we were motioned into a separate lane and three patrolman walked beside us to the main terminal. We were all interogated in separate rooms then put back together for 10 minutes and then a guy came out in latex gloves to do a strip search on us. When they led Brian away first I gave out a little sheep bleat noise where as Brian started laughing. From inside the room Brian could hear us bleating like lost lambs and you could hear him laughing from behind the closed door. The one Border patrolman came out and yelled at us to shut up or be arrested and fined for interfering with an investigation. So we shut up and when asked again why we were trying to enter Canada I spoke up and said, Listen all we want to do is go to downtown Vancouver rent a hotel room, play in a tournament and spend some money. After they made us sit for another hour another border guard came out and had Brian go out to his SUV and show them how to unlock it. The car alarm had been going off for over an hour. they finally let us go and continue on our way........

.......arg...!! now my coffees cold... :(

Hey Kush...

I figured I'd best get my replies in, because we'll be leaving on Saturday for a fancy wedding, which will take place Sunday evening on Long Island, NY (for which I've bought 3 dresses, and tomorrow will have to return 2) - all this nonsense from someone who has shopped at Goodwill almost exclusively for 27 years (except for shoes and undies) and who is proud and happy to admit it, and who is shocked by clothing prices at the retail shops. And then on Tuesday, we'll be off to Berlin.

So anyway... I'm not good at downloading music either, and actually, I seldom do. In fact, I have never downloaded music.. (well, that's quite a difference, isn't it, from seldom to never.) (makes me realize how we take advantage of language) I prefer to listen on Napster, or even Amazon 30 second clips, and then if I like it, I go buy the cd, simply because I like to have the liner notes, and everything that's written inside - the photos, the complete package. Besides, I'm a "chop wood, carry water" sort. But most of the time, I don't bother to listen ahead of time.. mostly I just like to be surprised. I find that with even the records you don't much like at first, many songs will grow on you. Soooo........ I forgot what I was going to say.

Never mind.... :--)

Oh yeah.. do you like Iris DeMent? Gillian Welch.. ?

Heheh.. red wine has such a powerful voice.

Hi Switz... loved your story.

When my oldest son was 14 or 15 (now age 26) he told me he wanted to dye his hair blue. So I took him to my hairdresser, and she stripped his naturally dark brown hair down to blond (took forever, we were there for hours) (while I cringed, but didn't let on) and then applied bright blue hair dye. He was very happy, and seemed to like it, but then, after awhile... somehow, having blue hair just didn't cut the mustard anymore. Slowly it all grew out, and came back to his own rich and vibrant color, and he never mentioned having anything but his natural color, ever again. We have lots of family pictures, many with Ian playing his electric guitar, back when he had electric blue hair.

Let me know how you like Yoshikazu Mera. Meanwhile, my good friend, Timster, has found out where I can buy a copy of Jan D'Gaetani singing Cole Porter. I guess I'll buy it "sight unseen".. and just be surprised.

Bobbie my teenage sons used to disappear into the bathroom with an electric razor and spend an hour in there cutting each others hair. It was like listening to a stage comedy with the curtain down. Things falling into the sink...razor buzzing ...laughter....silence...more laughter....more buzzing...more laughter. They would come out of the bathroom looking like last of the Mohicans or something the Toxic Avenger had created. This went on for about a three or four year period....oh yeah and shaving off their eye brow and lashes. I remember when they first started doing this ritual I used to think about the musical "Hair".

have a nice trip Bobbie :)
