I just don't see the darkness and certainly not the sourness, nor this "if you really love somebody, these are the _lies_ that you gotta learn to tell," at all. For me, Leonard's additions bring it forward in time, making it more 'current' than the period during which it was written. It also gives a very tangible sense of what is 'always' and what is not, though some people may want to make or believe it to be so... his addition adds the element of how real life so often plays out, intentionally or not, and how this singer really means "ALWAYS."
