I just sold my Death of a Ladies Man CD. And I am not going to buy the LP. That says how I feel about this album. The songs are just mediocre and boring. Cohen has done much better albums.

like a vacuum of infinite space encompassing :!:

A Teratogen quote I can definitely relate to :D ~ long time, no see, Teratogen :) . Good to see you here :D ~ now I'm wondering if you entered the Short Story Competition :D .

Yes ~ Our first, positive experiencings tend to indelibly imprint, don't they? Like my first hearing of the first word of "Suzanne." I'll never forget the impact.

Are you coming to Berlin?

well thanks. i haven't been gone actually. i check the boards every single night, but lately haven't found much that i've wanted to reply to. but this topic was brought back from the dead, so you KNOW i had to come with it. hahaha.

actually i stole that line from marilyn manson. he has a song called "count to 6 and die (the vacuum of infinite space encompassing)."

but sadly, i will not be coming to berlin. i was very, very excited about the location for the next event when it was first announced but any kind of plan i had fell through into the deep end. and the plans i had were very tentative at best anyway. europe has been a place i've wanted to visit for quite some time, and the heart of germany is a great place to start. someday. maybe 2008 will be looking better. i just wish these things weren't spread so far apart!!! hahaha. i mean, us americans get the least amount of vacation time than anyone else in the world!!!! you gotta figure everyone else from all these other countries have much more time on their hands!! especially since--and i don't want to insult anybody--most of these people are old and retired probably. but what can ya do?

"Older" Teratogen ~ "older"! A little "er" can end up saving you a lot of grief   .

I'm sorry you won't be there ~ but on that time/money/TIME issue, believe me, I understand. Not just unjust ~ but unhealthy ~ the differences!

absolutely. not enough time off can be quite draining and msot definitely unhealthy. i had to take a week off of work--not for vacation!--but just to freakin' RELAX. when that happens... you know something's GOTTA be wrong.

 So true. The switch-off so often ends up being that the majority of the time, you can't afford to take time off; then, when you're forced to, it's because you're sick and can't enjoy it, anyway. I've been watching and listening about the European, vacation system for years. It seems so obvious, to me. Then, about a month or so ago, I heard on the radio that some companies in Europe were considering going to the U.S. system. There go the health statistics over there ~ right through the roof  . We already have our own ballywick, to deal with, over here :( .

Bummer that you have to use time JUST to relax; time that will no longer be available for vacation stuff. I keep thinking I should do that ~ a "mental health day" is how some refer to it, but every time I have that thought, I think, "That's one less available for Berlin and Hydra [and, hopefully, Auschwitz] ~ get your day in motion." :(

It is the disc fewer Leonard Cohen, this way it is his worse disc.

But, I like it, I like a lot.

It seems to me like a shout to the free love, with love but especially with very much sex.

In that time I was very interested in all that  , really I was not very much successful. This disc was something as a brilliant ideological manifest

Hi!

I hope you know that the producer of Death of .... is the same producer who produced "Let it be" - the Beatles album..? Now he's in jail. He murded his wife. His name is Phil Spector. He have pointed a gun on both John Lennon and our man Leonard Cohen....
Just in case you didn't know.

thanks for your input, thomas, but these are well-known facts here in the u.s. and it was not his wife that he allegedly murdered, just a girlfriend.

Im new here, im from Manchester England.
I love 'Death of a ladies man', its unique when compared to the rest of Cohens pre 80s work.
My favourate track on it is 'True Love leaves no traces'.

that is definitely a great song. probably the only one on there that works well with specter's sound. the sound doesn't bother me too much like it does most people. the only complaint i may have (and everyone knows i love this album) is how the vocals don't match up well between cohen's and the backup vocals. he's had female backup on so much of his stuff, but this one was more awkward.

I have always enjoyed Death of A Ladies Man. That is one of my favorite poems by him too. It did kind of strike me as an oddball work of his but I've still enjoyed it regardless.

ummm the wall of sound

I can't understand it. I can agree about that's his whole potencial in lyrics is missing there, but Phil Specthor reinvented Cohen in some way, specially as the dark musician he is right now. Paper Thin Hotel is one of the saddest song I've ever heard and it wouldn't be that way without that overloaded atmosphere that Specthor painted in the whole album...well I've always loved that kind of sound that is suitable for any stereo...
Without Specthor we wouldn't have She's the one By Springteen, Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon... and Oasis! (I know, I know)
Without Specthor guns would be forbidden in Recording sessions.... Play as I told, fuckin' sessionist!!!!

I think there are enough musicians looking for work that this shouldn't be necessary  .

I hope you realise that it was a joke.
I think Phil Specthor was the first producer with talent in the rock culture. A man that can change the sound of any great artist deserves to be called an artist.
Anyway, I know the man is so fuckin' insane, but i'm not as interested in artist's biograpies as in its works.
I would like to keep discussing. I never put my foot down when art is the subject.
