Funny to see that the old discussion on the wave-particle duality of light has found its way to the Leonard Cohen Forum! I'm sure Einstein, Newton, Huygens and so many other great scientists would have loved it. :-)

The song for me resembles a mixture of 'The Faith' and 'On That Day'. Jennifer Warnes and the violin are gorgeous! I was missing the violin in the recent tour. Back to the sound in 'Recent Songs', a masterpiece of the music story. I don't know how the rest of the record will be, but I expected to listen to a whole band when I downloaded the song! We'll have to wait till January.

I'm pasting the Spanish translation I've made of the lyrics for Spanish readers of this forum (I'm an English teacher here in Spain)

Show me the place where you want your slave to go / Muéstrame el lugar al que deseas que se dirija tu esclavo
Show me the place I’ve forgotten I don’t know / muéstrame el lugar que he olvidado, que no conozco
Show me the place for my head is bending low /muéstrame el lugar, ya que mi cabeza está haciendo una reverencia
Show me the place where you want your slave to go / Muéstrame el lugar al que deseas que se dirija tu esclavo
Show me the place help me roll away the stone / muéstrame el lugar, ayúdame a mover la piedra
Show me the place I can’t move this thing alone / muéstrame el lugar, no puedo moverla solo.
Show me the place where the Word became a man /muéstrame el lugar donde el Verbo se hizo carne
Show me the place where the suffering began / muéstrame el lugar donde comenzó el sufriniento
-------------------- ------------------------------
The troubles came I saved what I could save / Llegaron los problemas y salvé lo que pude salvar:
A shred of light a particle a wave /una brizna de luz, una partícula, una onda
But there were chains so I hastened to behave / pero había cadenas, así que me apresuré a comportarme
There were chains so I loved you like a slave /había cadenas así que te amé como a una esclava

Show me the place where you want your slave to go,
'cause I am your slave, full of energy,
and I'll go anywhere in case you should tour,
so show me the place where you want your slave to go.

I think the song is excellent and at present I can only listen to it at work through the tiny tinny speaker on my monitor.
I am looking forward to hearing it on a system with at least some bass!

This is just lovely. It's sort of Tom Waits meets Scottish ballad. Really looking forward to Old Ideas.

I started on the tinny speakers too - and am amazed at the difference on my good quality sound system with plenty of bass and volume, a whole different experience I found.

Really like the song but hope there aren't too many others like it on the album. Want to hear Len sing more rather than recite/whisper but in isolation, it is rather beautiful. Is there a sonic glitch on the last lyric of Len's? Seems to be some kind of volume fluctuation

I like how a reference to Genesis lives alongside a nod to modern physics, and is it just me or does the repetitive "show me the place" echo distant pleas of "won't you let me see..."?

Maarten
thanks for that, Maarten!
the double nature of particles was part of a project I did last year for physics - and if I wasn't happy enough about it before, I am now!

What I found last year, in simple words, is that atoms and subatomic particles are not just particles, but they are particles and waves at the same time. Pure art (and a hell to understand, too). Because, what did F. Scott Fitzgerald say? "An artist is someone who can hold two opposing viewpoints and still remain fully functional."

And though we cannot blame Leonard for being two-faced, we can certainly praise him for balancing light and darkness in his music all these years and for showing us how to do it as well. Show Me The Place is another beautiful example of this balance...

I love it.
"Oh chosen love, Oh frozen love
Oh tangle of matter and ghost
Oh darling of angels, demons and saints
And the whole broken-hearted host
Gentle this soul..."
