Re: Happy Birthday, Leonard!
Only a week until your birthday and if you are at all like I think you are, it will be a rather quiet affair. Still--I do want to wish you another year of good health, happiness, and enjoyment of the things that make living worth it. Perhaps a dear friend will bake you a cake, if that is what you like, or serve you a glass of your favourite beverage with figs and cheese. Maybe you will listen to some great music on the radio --if you still listen to the radio. I wonder if CBC will play a song for you. They ought to! Whatever it is, however, and with whomever, dear Leonard and many happy returns.

Re: Happy Birthday, Leonard!
Thanks for the songs, Mr. Cohen!
And for the poems, the words of wisdom, and those joyous concerts.
I suspect you will be glad to have a quieter birthday this year - you did say "You need in life a mixture of solitude and carnival", so I hope next Wednesday and the years to come bring you just the right mixture of both!

Forget your perfect offering -

Re: Happy Birthday, Leonard!
To Leonard Cohen
on the occasion of your 77th birthday: Thanks for teaching me about the harmonious beauty
of the commonplace;
about the “crack[s] in everything”
and “how the light gets in;”
and for sharing your “love for all things:”
“...the objects on the table
Such as candlesticks and ashtrays
And the table itself.”
You taught me to love the coffee cups,
the wine stems,
the thorns and the roses,
and the taps of the kitchen sink;
and to “comprehend the sudden mercy
which floods the room
And dissolves it now
In the traditional golden light...”
while knowing about transience
and the ephemeral,
and that “it is light enough
to let it go...”
Thank you for leading me
to the friends I have made on the forum
and for drawing us together in the resplendent light of Hydra.
Thank you for singing your way all around the world.
Thank you for teaching me to see beauty with the eyes of the heart,
and for lending me the words with which to speak of it.
Here is my birthday gift to you, with the words of Bob Dylan
and the voice of Kitty Wells,
some photos celebrating light, life and love.

Mr. Cohen, your couple of lucky seven and some old ideas later I still don't find the words to explain you as a phenomenon, so I should stop to try, but I won't.
Happy Birthday and I wish you a long long life, peace to live long, and Love to enjoy everything.
Thank you for all the magical moments already created and many Encore! to come.

Happy Birthday Leonard
The Japanese say "The celebration of one’s 77th birthday is an example of ga no iwai. Age 77 is the “joyous year,” and to live until that age is indeed fortunate. The Japanese characters for kiju literally mean “joy” and “long life.”
So here's wishing you joy and long life.
