Oh dear, I have been on Facebook too much. Lately, I find myself auto-looking for the Like button here. In any case, I like what you said, Dick.
If I could manage to put time in a bottle, I'd pack it with all the years and all the awards that are happening now [for which I am so deeply grateful that Leonard is seeing] and all those many that will follow... and give them to him. Just so he can sort them and directly experience how deeply loved he is by people of all ages around the world for every reason that he holds dear in his lifelong pursuit of his art.

After all these years, it is about time, Leonard, started to reap a lot of overdue awards, I hope his mantlepiece is started to groan, with all the silverwear going on it.

My My --hard to imagine there was a time when I would mention Leonard Cohen and get blank stares from those around me. Who?
He will soon be as famous as Shakespeare. I wish my sister's poetry teacher could eat her words. In 1972 when she based her term paper on Leonard's work the Literature prof told her that Leonard was not a real poet. Such sweet vindication....Congratulations!

Such a great anecdote and one that sure fits the saying that "there's no revenge like success" and this, indeed, is sweet vindication, Theresa! Is that instructor no longer around? And wonderful that your sister chose Leonard

for her term paper. I love your reference to Shakespeare.
Yes, speaking of just a kid with a crazy dream... never let your dreams die... there's always time for them to come true and even beyond your own imagination! [Gotta make you wonder exactly how far his went... though early quotes suggest they could have gone even this far.]

Yes, yet another honour. I think, as with many others, I had never heard of the Prince of Asturias Award for Letters. It seems hidden in a small town in northern Spain and sounded like something from a fairytale! Thanks to Tom, and the list of previous honorees, I'm now quite well versed in this prestigious award.
Although Leonard will never read this, congratulations! I cannot imagine one other individual more deserving for a lifetime filled with poetry, some of which has become lyrics for songs...but the majority of which has become the most sensual, introspective, spiritual poetry ever written. His prose ranges from the sublime to the "close-to-pornographic", but each and every word hits us between the eyes.
Well-deserved....bravo!

"a body of literary work that has influenced three generations of people worldwide through his creation of emotional imagery in which poetry and music are fused in an oeuvre of immutable merit".
Cohen beat 31 other contenders from around the world to win the prize, taken in the past by Margaret Atwood, Günter Grass, Amos Oz and Paul Auster. "Considered one of the most influential authors of our time, his poems and songs have beautifully explored the major issues of humanity in great depth," said the jury in a statement. "The passing of time, sentimental relationships, the mystical traditions of the East and the West and life sung as an unending ballad make up a body of work associated with certain moments of decisive change at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century."
These literary juries sure know how to express Leonard's work, impact, and influence.
And, ever humble, Leonard demurs as he refers to the others.
