For when is a 'Jack' not a Jack, surely when it's a John.

Blimey Jo, I'm plumbing the deppths with this thread. :roll:

Oy! I'm a good girl I am - I don't like the implications of all this talk of "Johns" and "Jacks" (or half-jacks?). Even if my favoured apparel is fishnet stockings and my hangout under a lamppost I won't be having you casting asparagus at my good name. :shock: ...and my pirate will tell you just how good I am.

Pete? Pete!!! Tell him how good I am Pete!

Byron - you are putting your head in a moose and it's all just sour gripes.

Jo, just between us two I can tell you that Albert's real name is Jonathon Depp. Now how spooky is that? I have a teddy bear who'se / whose' ? name has been copied by an 18th century pirate what has immortality and incredible eyes. Wow. I tell yer Jo, it's enough to curdle yer porridge............

Sandra ~

I so agree with what you've said. Even though it may sound flippant, I'm serious when I ask are we allotted only one Truth per lifetime?

alloted?
I do not see the truth as ONE SINGLE TRUTH that suddenly is caught but just a true way of living, .....it is like a life lasting work of getting the authenticity

I don't know what truth is but I suspect you may find a glimmer of it by looking into the eyes of a man who watches a loved one die, knowing he will inevitably lose her...

or in the eyes of a woman who's just given birth...

or in the despair of a hungry or abused child...in the slaughter on a battlefield...

and in the almost unbearable beauty of a sunrise with birds singing and the smell of damp ground overwhelming your senses...

or the sweet sadness of a lamenting Coltrane or the drama of Beethoven.

I think truth is personal and eventually we all find our way to our very own brand of it.

Thank you Jo, :D

Beautifully put. Your first line, alone, sums it up exactly! That's why Pilate got no answer.

There is no religion higher than Truth
There is no Power greater than Love

For me, Truth/Love=God.
When we Seek, honestly and persistently, we will find.

Thanks for clarifying how you see it, Sandra. That's how I see it, too. I asked simply because of the "the" that keeps preceding the capitalized "Truth," generally speaking, not you per se.

I'm not sure whether your question mark means you don't know the meaning of allotted. I meant it in the sense of, "allowed to have only one, out of perhaps a number that are available." Apportioned would have probably been the better word for what I meant, i.e. "a dividing according to some principle." That would be as in, 'You get one Truth and I get one Truth." The "principle" part of it would be the basis of/for my question ~ as in, what is that principle?

OK. Enough of that. Time for bed :lol: .

Porridge??? Porridge, Byron???
Does it come with syrup?

Your revelation of Albert's true identity is almost as spooky as the fact that my real name is Jean Baker - and you can tell me nothing at all about immortality that I don't already know...
But you won't tell anyone, will you? I've grown accustomed to my anonymity - it allows me to move around freely. Misbehaving crowds really are very hard on equipment - and an efficient broom servicing establishment is so hard to find lately.

Now what did you say Albert's address is? And where exactly is that? You understand of course that this information is merely for my records - I wouldn't dream of kidnapping any innocent unsuspecting Johns. Uh ... uh ... Alberts! Yes - Albert that's who I meant.

Ethereally yours

We could always put the syrup on, Pete, but cream buns would do nicely too... :shock: ... and the surprise - hamster or otherwise - could come later...

I've just got back and discover that you have called me a Jack - Me, a Jack!!! - I will have you know that as a Rugby fan I am a Wizard and as a soccer fan I am a Bluebird.

But wait, there is hope for the truth in Mathematics:

Let x=1

Multiply both sides by x

x squared = x

Subtract 1 from both sides

x squared -1 = x-1

factorise

(x-1)(x+1)=(x-1)

Divide both side by (x-1)

x+1=1

Subtract 1 from each side

x=0

But x=1

Therefore 1=0

John = Jack

Heretic = Sandra

Albert = Porridge

and I need another spell away from my computer

I am guessing that various contributers are refering to Harry Potter literature. I have to say in all honesty that I have not read any of the books and not seen any of the films. Does that qualify me for Sad Bastard Of The Week? :roll:
All of my posting has been in relation to my favourite film actor, namely Johnny Depp. Therefore, does that expunge me of any guilt for not knowing anything about H.Potter? :?

After J.Depp, my favourite actor is Ken Stott, who was magnificent in the TV serial about an Asylum. I have catholic tastes if nothing else. 8)

I'd just like to say that, in my opinion, Truth is indeed perception, to many people.

Are there not many versions of Truth?

I am not certain we ever know truth as humans, since our perceptions and instincts taint all that we see.

It comes down to whose perception we choose to accept as the truth.

So, truth is beauty,a dn truth is ugly, too.

Yes, Gandhi said something to the effect that many truths can exist simultaneously, and not necessarily be contradictory.

I particularly like Khalil Gibran's little gem on the subject:
