The sole reason for him going back on tour was to replenish his pension fund. His ex manager managed to sell, behind his back, all the copyrights to songs prior to that and that would include Hallelujah.

I don't know about the technicalities but someone said he had retained the performing rights.
God that makes my blood boil! It's so unjust!Do whoever has bought the rights have royalties from the songs or have they been suspended until it is settled in court?

The finalists have all recorded a cover of Leonard Cohen's classic Hallelujah, which the winner will release in time for Christmas.

Good idea John. Especially if they included Silent Night.

I vote - good thing.

I'm in my early 30s and got into Leonard Cohen via REM's cover version of "First we take manhatten" which they put on the B-side of their single, Drive. I then bought the "Closing Time" single, which also had 'first we take manhatten' as a B-side, along with 'Famous blue raincoat'. I loved FBR and bought Leonard Cohen's Greastest Hit's album which my dad (in his 50s) got really into. Now we've both got all his stuff and went along to see him in Cardiff in November.

So, even if the song is a terrible travesty, if it sells well it'll raise Mr.Cohen's profile and is likely to draw in a few new listeners to his work.

For the record, I can't stand the Buckley version of the song (my favourite is John Cale's version).

Hi Palefire,

I commend you on your good taste for agreeing that John Cale's cover version is the best. The greatest danger of the X-Factor version is that the damn thing will no doubt be inflicted on us in supermarkets, bars and all sorts of other places.

Best wishes, John E

... and now you can vote on whether you think it's a good idea.

Me, I think they should scrap the Christmas Hallelujah cover for and do "Dress Rehearsal Rag" for a laugh. It has references to Santa Claus in it, after all...

Thanks for adding the Silent Night MP3 Jarkko. We seem to get to Christmas quicker and quicker each year.

Simon Moorehead said "Alexandra will sing Seems So Long Ago Nancy / Please Dont pass Me by"

Would "Alexandra Leaving" not be a better choice?

Where is Leonard now ? Has there been any sightings in or around the ITV studios this week . It does say that there will be " surprise guests "

Surely Leonard has got better things to do than go and watch his song be butchered  It would be fascinating to see what advice he'd give though.

My song recommendation for all of them:

'If it be your will
That I speak no more
And my voice be still
As it was before'

And then suit the action to the word
I'm chained to the old masquerade...

I agree he has better things to do but in the unlikely event of him " getting lost in that hopeless little screen " I am sure he would be as always gracious and diplomatic in his comments .
