RE: DYLAN
Oh dear, I seem to have irritated Dylanophiles... didn't mean to, have always loved his music. I was referring to his concerts of the 1990s; I remember him going through the motions, his world tours seemed like joyless occasions, songs so different from recorded versions, maybe that was just my perception... (I hear his recent UK tour was great). Felt like a very different experience from Cohen concerts, which feel like so much more. Or others - just before he died Lonnie Donnegan gave a concert in Glasgow that was total magic. Re musicians talking to us during concerts - I wasn't suggesting everyone should! I don't have preconceptions on the subject. I just feel that those who do like talking to the audience, are more interesting when they say what comes to mind at the time. Cohen is a wordsmith in conversation as well as song, it's one of the pleasures of his concerts and films. That's not Dylan's persona; no problem! But Dylan can choose how he wants to convey his music, and I hope I'm not the only person alive who thinks he doesn't always do it in a way that's enjoyable to listen to...
Even though we dont see eye to eye on some points, i fully agree with what you say about the songs sound different on stage from the album, and it is most anoying when sometimes you cant tell what the tune is until about 30 seconds into it because it has changed that much.
Thanks Stan.
These message boards are so imprecise; we probably see eye to eye more than we think; it's just hard to express oneself clearly online. When I was growing up I had only one musical hero : Dylan. Then I discovered Cohen, I love listening to them both, and am grateful for their poetry and vision. Cohen in performance is just more 'me', I guess; at least he was 15 years ago (and in his interviews too). There are others - other voices certainly (Nina Simone, Tom Waits...), but Cohen and Dylan are... well, who knows what the right adjective would be? I'm looking forward to seeing if Cohen's concerts now are anything like they were 15 years ago. Let's touch base after the tour! Happy listening, Habie x
Hi Habie
You are so right about not being able to express yourself properly on line, sometime people sound angry but they are not, because you cant sense the tone of the conversation.
I dont know if we are talking on the right thread!,Dylan has always been one of my favs since being at school, but top of the list is LC, I sort of remember sneeking in to see him about 1970 in Liverpool, but i did not have a ticket and security threw me and me mate out before the show started so i never got to see him.
So i hope he is as good as you say, im sure he will be, im stuck i a musical time warp, i.e.free, melanie,Jackson Browne,Wishbone ash, good to talk to ya mate, see or talk to ya soon, sorry if i ramble on but its my age, in fact ive forgot how old i am.
Stan,
Don't worry, rambling's what it's all about. 'And here's to you / my rambling boy / may all your rambling / bring you joy...' (you know that song, of course? If not, have a listen online, it's Tom Paxton).
If you haven't yet seen LC, you're in for a treat, as anyone on this board will tell you. He gives of himself completely, he makes you feel he's singing just for you. When he was last in the UK I filmed his concert on Super-VHS, I still have one of the tapes, from the first half of the concert (the second was confiscated when I stupidly stood up to film, I got so excited...!). I don't know how to show S-VHS now, but it's a great tape, so maybe I should get it put onto DVD and can show it to anyone who'd like to see it. He sings Suzanne and may others. I wish I hadn't lost the second half of the concert though, because the encores were amazing. I wonder who his backing singers will be this time; last time it was Perla and Julie, beautiful voices. The harmony they have, LC and his backing singers, is a thing of wonder.
What are your favourite Dylan and LC songs? Some Dylan ones I love are Tomorrow Is a Long Time, Lay Lady Lay, Shelter from the Storm, To Ramona, Lily Rosemary & Jack of Hearts and Wedding Song (not very original, i know...). WIth LC, my favourites are too many to mention, but I could happily listen forever to Marianne, Raincoat, Joan of Arc, Hallelujah, Bird on a Wire, I'm Your Man, Take This Waltz, Dance Me, Chelsea Hotel, A Singer Must Die, Tower of Song, Field Commander Cohen, Why Don't You Try... not very original either, I know!). Anyway, nice chatting to you. Best, Habie x
Habie,
You may have seen it by now,but the backing singers have been announced on another thread: The fantastic Sharon Robinson, and, from the UK,the very talented Webb sisters!
