Cheshire gal, many Joni Mitchell fans think 'Blue' is even better than 'Hejira'. You can read excellent rewiews of these two albums on Amazon. Some say that 'Blue' is the best album ever, but of course all LC lovers know that it can't be true.

At this moment I'm listening to 'Mule Variations', a Tom Waits album. Beautiful ballads there, such as "Hold On" and "Georgia Lee".

Hi Gerrida,

I am such a new fan of Joni Mitchell that after hearing Hejira and just loving Coyote, Amelia and Sharon I cannot get any further for the time being. I do have the album Blue and like it. I will give it a further listen and try to compare them. Joni has really never made a bad album has she? I enjoy all of her work. I have her dvd's also, and love 'Painting with words and music' . I could watch that forever and not get tired of it.

I have been listening a lot to music written by Scott Joplin. He is a ragtime composer (probably the most famous). The movie The Sting used his music as a soundtrack but they only touch on a few of his greats in the movie. Check out Sugar Cane Rag, Stop Time Rag, Bethena and Heliotrope Bouquet for some great soul lifting ragtime composed by a genius.

I know prog rock is not most people on this forum's cup of tea (except Pete's) but I saw Marillion a number of times in the early 80s and had all their albums. Singer Fish had a fantastic edge to his voice, and his lyrics were rather good at times. I am enjoying a re-vist to those years lately, with the only albums I have on cd; B Sides Themselves, The Theiving Magpie (live), and Kayleigh The Essential Collection (which also has tracks from the early Steve Hogath years). Would like to eventually get again all the studio albums.

But I really enjoyed them. I will have to do a bit more research on them.

Thanks also to everyone who adds to our enjoyment on this 'Other Music' page. I have heard and seen so many excellent singers that I was unaware of. It really does broaden your musical outlook.

I'm pleased you enjoyed, Cheshire Gal! A little melodramatic but sometimes that's just the ticket. I only followed Marillion during the Fish era (his real name is Derek Dick), and would say that those three albums I mentioned contain most of their best tracks from that time. Steve Hogath took over as lead singer in 1986 and the band have been going strong with him since then, but are comparatively wishy-washy, imo. One song I do like from Hogath's Marillion is Out of This World, which is about Donald Campbell, who died in 1967 while attempting a speed record on Coniston Water in England (he remains the only person to set both world land and water speed records in the same year:1964). A diver decided to find the wreck after hearing the song, and Steve Hogath sang it solo at Campbell's subsequent funeral.

the translation here seems good, with the exception of the line,
"to behold you at last shall come a sore Ghani Khan" which might be better phrased,
"to behold you at last shall come a sorrowful Ghani Khan" - same meaning.

I shall be further investigating this trio...

Nice one Diane. I look forward to their coming out with an album. They appear to be a group similar to Niyaz who have released two albums (self titled and Nine Heavens) of Farsi and Urdu poetry set to music, led by vocalist Azam Ali.
