HA HA ..Im sorry Boirina...Im giggling away here, you wont need us to look after you on the night in the dark ...I would love to have a man escorting me around Lisbon singing The Chelsea Hotel in my ear.. .
Another potential Lisbon concert-goer, eh? [tents fingers a la Mr.Burns] Excellent, excellent.
The area the venue is in is Alges/ Oeiras. You might try inputting 'Alges' into the search box at http://www.booking.com as they have a great map facility for each hotel, and you can see exactly how far away you are from where you need to be. There is a thread titled 'Lisboa' in the 'On the Road with Leonard' section that shows exactly where they'll be setting up the stage in Alges, so you can compare from there.
Hi boirina,
Following Vivamus advice above I found a hotel very near Alges, at a great price, At least I think it was... Irish hotels can be very expensive, this was much cheaper. There will be a great mix of nationalitys at this meet-up, I can't wait.
At the Dublin Meet-up there were lots of people about that had read about the meet-up and just turned up, some people can be shy about posting, maybe you should count a few extra, or maybe they would PM Vivamus to be counted but there names not posted.
i've just posted a message in the other gatherings thread and now i've realised you've moved back to the old thread. excuse me, please, i'm very short of time recently so cannot follow all the posts. can anyone tell me where and when is the final meetup? i'm very eager to meet you all...
lots of kisses,
magda
Beyond the myths and the masks the soul remains alone...
I'm also thinking of releasing something in the wild, or maybe I should say that I'm thinking of putting together something to release in the wild on that day.
You see, I'm a bookcrosser, and that's the bookcrosser's way: We are always thinking of releasing stuff in the wild. The only problem is that I am not ready to part with any of my LC's books, so I guess I'll have to put something together to release at the event. After all, nobody said that released books couldn't be unique and hand made.
So... any ideas will be most welcome.
PS. I've read that some other Portuguese bookcrossers will be at the event too.
Uum...Bookcrossing, ... Ive been thinking all day about your post on that topic and I'm sorry to say that on any Leonard Cohen books I must be a selfish human being.... I have these two.. very old, very worn, and very loved and well read Leonard Cohen books and there "aint no way " that they will be crossing my doorstep, let alone the ocean to Portugal .....I will be selfishly keeping them for myself!....But then Boirina perhaps you are meaning other books...not just Leonard Cohen books??....I think that the concept is a good one for those ones people are ready to be finished with...but I think that perhaps Im just too much of a sentimental idiot when it comes to my books, cd's ....I'll be joining the hoarders club I think.... Good luck with what you intend doing though...
I didn't mean just books by Leonard Cohen, I meant something to release on the day of the event.
I also have a few, also very old and very old (two were sent to me by a Finnish bookcrosser, I must say) and I am not ready to part with them yet. I was actually thinking of making something myself (maybe some of my mandalas and some lines by him), something small and nice (my book is nice too but too big), hand-made. I was actually thinking of digging out the songbook I had about 20 years ago to see what I had underlined back then, and to read my notes, and see what I could come up with.
About accomodation... I have booked the hotel room somewhere else, half way between Algés and Baixa/Chiado. The hotel is Called Vila Galé Ópera and I found a room for 77€, which is quite a bargain for a 4-star hotel. It is also very convenient for me, as it's not too far from the station.
Hi again,
No its ok..I have a folder that Ive been collecting all that logistical travel/ some other stuff in for the last few months... I'll see you there.
And I realised that Magda, noone has said "hullo again! to you".....yes you will see that we are now meeting at the Irish Pub called...um..I forget!,from 5pm onwards, I wondered what had happened to you.Theres theres a link a few messages back, with a map .....my challenge right now is getting into the city for a meeting on time, and there is a nationwide protest on with all the truckies converging on all the city central business area..very slowly...
Roll on Lisbon, and Leonard and summertime eh....not long now..
cheers to that!
boirina wrote:I have discovered that there are buses running all night long between Algés and Cais do Sodré, and from Cais do Sodré all over the city.
I've seen it at the bus company website: http://www.carris.pt The name of the night bus service is "Rede Madrugada".
For all foreigners friends a advice: Lisbon is a safe city but must be carefully at night in the old streets, OPEN YOUR EYES and everything will be fine!!
Coliseu dos Recreios Lisboa 1988, Passeio Marítimo de Algés Lisboa 2008, Pav. Atlântico Lisboa 2009, Pav. Atlântico Lisboa 2010 (Meet Cohen at a cafe on the main Lisbon's avenue on the concert's eve), Pav. Atlântico Lisboa 2012
Yep...thanks Bluebird, I think mine are open too...(too wide at times!? and not enough at others??)...We are a "safe" city too, but there seems to be more and more unsafe things happening around the night time streets...even way over here.....And on the "after dark" stuff I think I'm with Vivamus on that one...."call a cab"....
I can hardly believe how quickly the time is passing--being on holidays, I thought it would drag. I am also from a safe city--(now the #1 murder capital of Canada) --however I still manage to get by. I think if we travel in our group, singing Leonard's songs, (like a bird on a wire for example) would be thieves and profligates, will go howling off in the night. I personally, have taken some unusual risks (such as meeting with perfect online strangers) and have managed to remain on this planet in spite of it. Perhaps singing Leonard's songs to myself wherever I go is the ticket. --I once hitchhiked from London to Amsterdam and caught a ride with two smallish men in a van named Funk (their names were Frodo and Samwise)--honest. At least that is what they told me. geeze just realized I should look them up online. I wonder if they are still travellin in that van. Anyway....in the new lingo (It's all good) isn't it?
Yep St Theresa.. there is safety in numbers....and we have met a few "perfect online strangers" of late haven't we??...I was also thinking Boirina, I have a New Zealand Short Story book on my shelf which is gathering dust, has not been opened in years!..and I think deserves to be released to the wilds of Europe..I will give it to you....I'm just beginning a packing and weighing exercise as I have some other goodies in my bag to bring as well.....(The theory is that as I give them to their respective recipients, there will be room in my bag going home for more European treasures to come back here!)..So that also makes me more choosy on clothes..if I load up with enough important things like books, wine and other things, there wont be room for many clothes...but its summertime in Europe!!...Wont need the jackets, scarves, wool jerseys that I'm piling on here these days.... ..All good
Meeting "perfect online strangers" seems to be one of my habits. Some of them have become very good friends of mine. Actually, sometimes I tend to forget that my husband and I started our relationship as "perfect online strangers" about 8 years ago.
I was wondering if I should create some labels for the books released on this occasion. What do you think?
Also, any idea of how many people are likely to show up at the Irish pub? I might bring a little surprise for each, if I can manage.
Hi folks
Its Catswhiskers again---bet you must have thought I had disappeared off the planet!!! have been keeping up with your news whenever I can---and have only just come back from a trip back to England.
Well, the DAY is fast approaching--and words cannot describe my joy.
I have a question to ask the forum--I think we are driving up--so anyone with ideas on how easy it is to park at Passeio maritimo?? We do not know Lisbon at all---living in a tiny village in the "middle of nowhere"--our nearest big town is Pombal. Even though we would love to stay up there overnight--we have to drive back that night/early hours of Sunday----having a large animal menagerie, such as ours---it wouldn't be fair to leave then all on their lonesome. Thanks so much----and see you all on the night.
