Mary,

Before I watched this on the link you provided, the words above instantly gave me a visual. I didn't know what to think   .

Some people automatically dismiss hip-hop because of preconceived ideas. (I personally like a song by Trick Daddy called 'I'm a Thug' - deceiving title. Then you watch the video and listen to the lyrics and wow!). If someone thinks they don't like a certain genre of music, another person can say 'listen to this' and all of sudden you realize that it is not the awful music you thought it was originally.

That LC called K'naan a poet, this is the highest praise indeed and I hope K'naan is aware of who it was that was paying him this compliment.

Glad you stayed safe :D

Yeah - how extremely perfect! I watch the show also, so this means it's coming back on again soon? I'll have to watch for the promos now. Thanks for the heads up on this Afric!

Best regards,

Afric,

Just saw a promo for the new season of Flash Forward here in the States and sadly no LC 'Future', but I'll keep looking for it. Maybe as we get closer to the season premier, the promos will include the song. It's so perfect for that show.

Just watched the opening show of the last  season of Lost - it's always a WOW.

Everyone in our lab is gone for the day,
and as I approach my 12th hour,
my day is winding down with a report,
a report of numbers, specs, and units,
meaningless to the world,
but meaningful to me and my boss,

The Sisters Of Mercy are playing off my ipod,
and this song, this evening transported me to
that fine night in San Jose last November,
and all the wonderful people I met.

I look forward to seeing my forum friends.

What evidence is there for this extraordinary assertion? Leonard is very careful not to endorse other people's work because, as he told me once, if he endorsed one person's work he'd be under pressure to endorse others too. Fairer to remain silent, he feels.

As Leonard has been close to genuine poets like Irving Layton, and is strongly influenced by major figures like Lorca and Cavafy, he is hardly likely to say something trite like this, let alone to a young man whose personal story may be exceptional but whose music is not.

This is just an ambitious young man's hype. Don't believe it.

It was mentioned twice on CBC Radio 2. I know that K'naan performed at the pre Grammy bash at the Canadian Consulate that Leonard attended so maybe that was where it was said. There was no indication in the report that K'naan himself had told this story, in fact, I had quite the opoposite feeling. You can believe it or not, it's up to you.

Just out of interest I followed up with the person at the CBC who had mentioned this several times. He said that K'naan's manager had told him this at the Canada for Haiti benefit.

First, you have to realize that I have limited computer skills. Next, our son, who went to the LC Columbus concert with us, likes some of his music, still doesn't understand my obsession with all things LC, but tolerates it.
Then, when I get on the computer today and voila! - my son has put up a photo of LC as my new background 8) :D :D  !

This afternoon as I was rushing around the shopping area in the centre of Cambridge, I heard a guitar sound from a street performer who was just out of range. I couldn't hear what he was playing but something made me stop, walk back and away from where I was heading, and as I came closer the melody fell into place, Suzanne. A tall young man with a woollen hat, scarf, long coat, his guitar and portable microphone, was singing Leonard's song beautifully, so I stood and listened. Lots of people were listening. What a treat. Of course I dropped some coins in his hat, he said "thanks" so I said "thank you, I love Leonard Cohen".

It was strange, I really could not originally hear what he was singing, what it was that turned me round and directed me towards him I do not know. A little bit spooky, but a lovely random moment.

When I go to my sister's on the train, the line goes right past Mercedes Benz World at Weybridge. Gazing at it on a wet, grey, bedraggled winter day, my mind drifted back to seeing Leonard there, on a wet, grey, bedraggled summer's day! What a fantastic concert that was, I hope that this summer brings us many more :)

Today would have been the Lilleconcert. `My darling, says Leonard, just let it go by`. It helps. And looking forward to september 25th.
