And Who by fire, Who by water,
Who in the sunshine, Who in the night time,
Who by high ordeal, who by common trial,
Who in your merry merry month of May,
Who by very slow decay,
And who shall I say is calling?

And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate,
Who in these realms of love, who by something blunt,
And who by Avalanche, who by powder,
Who for his greed, who for his hunger,
And who shall I say is calling?

And who by brave assent, who by accident,
Who in solitude, who in this mirror,
Who by his lady's command,
Who by his own hand
Who in mortal chains, who in power,
And who shall I say is calling?

Leonard oh Leonard. The world has a huge hole in it now. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your endless gifts of words and music. What would my life have been like without them? A lot poorer.

You encompassed nobility of the highest order and spoke about things that most were afraid to speak of. You knew humanity more than anybody else I have heard or read or listened to

Thanks to you I made many great friends too It is hard being alone thinking on this sad day. So great to read the other posts and know there is a huge community grieving for this wonderful man

Sleep well dear man. It is in love that we are made in love we disappear

it's difficult to accept , as Leonard Cohen is part of my life.
I'm listening again to his testament disc :

"Steer your heart past the Truth you believed in yesterday
Such as Fundamental Goodness and the Wisdom of the Way
Steer your heart, precious heart, past the women whom you bought
Year by year
Month by month
Day by day
Thought by thought"

That is how he will remain immortal.
My sincere condoleancies to the family and to all of us.

I also wasn't prepared for this. I'm so sad.
I'm so thankful that I've seen Leonard several times in Europe and that he has enriched my life with his songs and his lyrics.
My thoughts are with his family.
Rest in peace, Leonard. You'll be missed.

Cannot stop crying. I feel devastated and deeply sad. Leonard meant the world to me. His kindness meant the world to me. At a loss for words. With deep love and gratitude, Nicole

And the night comes on
And it's very calm
I lie in her arms and says, When I'm gone
I'll be yours, yours for a song

Thank you for giving us the songs.

OHHH! Heard this oh so sad news on the 7am news today, couldn't believe it!
Have listened to you Leonard, for over 40 years of my life. Will always continue to play your extraordinary music for the rest of my life.
You've left us all and gone to join Roshi and everybody you loved that left before you in that place of no more sorrow. But for me, my sadness is immense just now.
Feel so privileged to have watched you - and sung about laughing and crying with you in concert so many times. The amazing experience of seeing you in magical moonlight in the amphitheatre in Pula, Croatia was what came first into my mind..
Thank you, Jarkko and Eija for this forum, and to all of you that organised the two year events, and love to all my friends that I have met at those events and have spent special time with, and of course also at Leonard's concerts in so many places in the world - and thank you, Leonard for what you gave so unstintingly. You were unique in this world.
In the end I never met you, but I feel as though I did.

You and everybody knows that old black Joe is STILL pickin' cotton.

Rest well, dear Leonard, the sisters were waiting for you. Sue xx

Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau led tributes to his great countryman Leonard Cohen, who has died aged 82.

The nation’s leader issued a statement on behalf of all Canadians in which he honored the great songwriter and singer as “a most remarkable Montrealer.”

Read Trudeau’s full tribute below.

“It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of the legendary Leonard Cohen.

“A most remarkable Montrealer, Leonard Cohen managed to reach the highest of artistic achievement, both as an acclaimed poet and a world-renowned singer-songwriter. He will be fondly remembered for his gruff vocals, his self-deprecating humor and the haunting lyrics that made his songs the perennial favorite of so many generations.

“Leonard Cohen is as relevant today as he was in the 1960s. His ability to conjure the vast array of human emotion made him one of the most influential and enduring musicians ever. His style transcended the vagaries of fashion.

“Leonard Cohen was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2003 and received many artistic honors during his lifetime, including being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“He received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2010 and was awarded the Glenn Gould Prize for lifetime achievement in the arts in 2011. In 2013, with a career already spanning more than fifty years, he won Junos as Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for his 2012 album Old Ideas. His music had withstood the test of time.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I wish to express our deepest sympathies to Leonard Cohen’s family, friends, colleagues and many, many fans.

“Leonard, no other artist's poetry and music felt or sounded quite like yours. We'll miss you.”

Dear family and friends of Leonard Cohen. His death is a profound blow to us who have been tracking his work and observing his unsurpassable creative genius. His songs and poems stay with us and guide and misguide many who have embarked upon the road. I have never spoken with him or looked into his eyes in person but his work has been a great inspiration to me. It’s proven that we can go further than we think. In our creative work, relationships, religion, suffering or joy. Although, sometimes I would not swallow everything he said or did, I have built up a very tense relationship with his artistic output and therefore I grieve. May we cultivate his great legacy and teachings of the heart. My sincere condolences to you.

So sad you're gone Leonard. Thank you so much for the music, the fun and the many fond memories - especially the wonder that was Hydra 1999! You will continue always to be a light in our lives. With love, Paul and Nóirín.
