Great stuff! ...and ironically I don't think I've ever listened to this properly before. I didn't understand what this band were about at the time, but I had a lot more time for the band after Dennis Loccoriere chatted with me on the Brian Wilson message board. Here are three more favourites from the early Seventies (all still touring!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdKfHObwQf4 ("At the Crossroads" by Mott the Hoople)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ_UuPH3cyw ("Hold Your Head Up" by Argent)

I'd never heard of the Edgar Broughton Band before but I liked that song.
"Hold Your Head Up" by Argent is a classic though and Matt The Hoople I knew from their David Bowie "All The Young Dudes" cover and one other song which I can't recall at the moment(old age!)
Gosh,I'm so addicted to this thread!

Kwills, these fall under music i've never heard of! Loved them both especially Since I left you, something very sweet yet odd about it.
Thanks for posting these.

Many people first heard Leonard singing "Sisters of Mercy" on the CBS sampler "The Rock Machine Turns You On" - released in 1968 (it was the last track on side one). Here, in sequence, are the four tracks that preceded it (all of which I really like):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS-SE4EIIUc ("I Won't Leave My Wooden Wife For You, Sugar" by the U.S.of A.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfwFpRnOeGg ("Time of the Season" by the Zombies)

John -

Rain and Tears by Aphrodite's Child has a familiar melody - a popular youtube video highlights many other songs that use the chord progression from Pachelbel's Canon in D:

Pachelbel Rant, Rob Paravonian

Here is the Canon in D:

Pachelbel, Canon in D (c1694)

Here is a personal favorite that Paravonian missed:

Streets of London, Ralph McTell, 1969

and a few of the songs that he referenced:

Let It Be, The Beatles, 1970

One Tin Soldier, The Original Caste, 1970

Cryin,' Aerosmith, 1993

Hook, Blues Traveler, 1994

Graduation (Friends Forever), Vitamin C, 2000

Hi Bequia,

I knew "Rain and Tears" was based on Pachebel's "Canon in D" but I've never particularly associated with it - probably because I heard it first, and the main melody is different. Definitely a classic, but I can pass on Demis Roussos other work!

All the best, John E
