I have that excellent album, Dharma, thanks to a lady from down under who used to frequent this board. Gurrumul has an exceptionally tender and soulful voice doesn't he. The translations of the lyrics are interesting - there's a lot about connectedness to land and ancestors, and the evocative aspects of nature such as sunsets and thunder - as you'd maybe expect from an indigenous singer.

My current favourite from the album is Galiku, simply because of the use of the word "gilan", which is described as being the word for "the sound made by a mast rope against the mast and a flapping flag at the masthead". It sounds like an onomatopeaic word like "clang". I am always enchanted to hear that sound. In the song it seems to be associated with the flag of Gurrumul's people, and to allude to the way the winds (of change) are shredding the flag.
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance is here, take it
From this northerly wind, take it
On the mast the flags are playing, take it
The flags torn by the wind, take it

Gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, fraying to pieces, take it

torn flags, mast arms,
gilan, gilan, gilan, on the masts, shredded flags
shredded by the power of wuduminy, gangayparra winds

You (flags) asked to fly dancing from the northern wind
flags dancing there at Mindharnura, Wilirnura, Muthamul

(...)

Raising a new folded flag, take it
'gilan' as it is raised up the mast, take it
Singing the country Djannala, Gapala, Barrumbarru, take it
Because this is marked for Gatinba, take it
gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, gilan, disappears from sight

(translation)

ps tonight I am listening to the big music of The Waterboys' This is the Sea. A classic classic album.

Hi Diane
Had some time to lurk today and came across you and dharma enjoying 'our Geoffrey'. I saw him live not too long ago at a Footy Club do - he really is special.

Loved your take on the song.

Thanks

BM great to see you! It must be about a year ago we saw Leonard in Cardiff. What a fantastic weekend that was. I miss seeing your intelligent posts around this place. I imagine that you knew I'd like this album before you gave it to me, and that's just another of the reasons I like it so much:-) Very cool that you saw Geoffrey live. Catch you later.

Hello Kwills! Nice to see you. (I envy you taking Twm for a walk with those frosty mountains as your backdrop.) Yes, it's an excellent, passionate album, with great lyrics, great musicianship, and '"full of elemental ferocity" - really glad you are liking it.

I don't have the most recent studio album, Book of Lightning, but lately I heard this track from it.

You In the Sky:

By the way, the lucky Irish have a Waterboys show setting WB Yeats' poetry to music, coming up next March. Sounds very interesting:
