Hi holydove,

You have a correct answer, though the song and words are different than what I had in mind.

Hi Steven,
After a quick look at Genesis 22 there are two words that Leonard did use for another song, though I can't say for sure they inspired him to do so from here :)

"fire and wood" from Joan Of Arc

A second thought which possibly makes it more probable is from the song The Butcher which has "only son" (and "only child") in its verses. Those first two words "only son" are repeated three times in Genesis 22. It's funny because when I first heard Story Of Isaac and The Butcher both on Songs From A Room, I used to often interchange the verses in my mind

Hi B4real,

Your first guess is the one that I had in mind. It's a sure thing for me that L.C. took inspiration from the binding of Isaac chapter. Here's why: Sacrifice is fairly equivalent to martyr. Joan of Arc was/is regarded as a martyr. I believe that L.C. beheld the fire and wood emphasized in the text. Of course, I can be wrong. Nah, can't be. Not with this. :)

I interchanged some lines between "Story of Isaac" and "The Butcher" myself when I first heard the songs. "The Butcher," in the first verse, appears to draw directly from the same Genesis chapter and appropriates Christian reference/imagery (Jesus, according to Christian theology, is the "Lamb of God" -- John 1:29).

Thanks.

Thanks Steven,
It’s always interesting how we see LC’s lines! Now see if anyone can figure this out.

Name a song about doing something physical continuously when it is dark ;-)
This song has a very close (back to back or you could say side to side and singular) physical relationship with the above last song both Steven and I have written about and oh, btw there is a bird mentioned in it

Bev, you must be talking about Do I Have to Dance All Night!
B-sided by The Butcher (both from Paris 1976), - but personally I prefer Amsterdam 1980 version.
I've searched to read what you've written about it and I like this:
That’s the versatility of Leonard’s music. There are so many levels – it’s like peeling the layers of an onion! Mind you, the center is much sweeter!!
Oh, and your very first post here!

Ah Roman, I can’t fool you! Very well done :D I thought I might have to give some more clues but no. That’s the answer all right! It was only released officially as a single.
“Ooh tell me, Bird of Paradise,
do I have to dance all night?”
Now I have checked these images and they are OK for non-commercial use. I was going to use the first two as visual clues - and I can't help myself to still post them

That song was sung at least 16 times in 1976 at concerts (twice on the one night for some) and only once that I know of in 1980 at a slower tempo and as we know that was Amsterdam. I like both versions depending on my mood. Of all the 1976 ones, I do like the Montreux Jazz Festival version.

Yes, I remember writing that, but I was speaking generally about all LC's songs. It was in Nov 2009 and DIHTDAN was my favourite song at that particular moment.

I have posted here (in this thread) on a few occasions previously :) If you mean my first post on the forum, it was in June 2009.

Over to you now.

Thanks!..
This wonderful song used to be played twice at the same concert in 1976 very often - for 15 occasions, as far as I know!!!
Actually, during two gigs in Zurich (June 21-22) it was played for, let's say, 4,5 times: the first time he's forgotten the words in the middle of the 3rd minute.
If we count this, it makes Do I Have to Dance All Night one of only four LC songs played for 3 times at one night.

Please name the other songs from this list of fame:
the first is related to Hydra,
the second - to - don't laught! - birds,
the last one - to what is, I believe, your favourite musical instrument, Bev.

Well, I'm listening to that (Zurich) concert right now: LC has started the 2nd DIHTDAN right after the 1st attempt, with You never have to tell me what line.
Anyway, you have the question, friends!

Didn't he play 'Dance Me' for about two and a half times in London in 2013?

Good morning, Roman :)
I’ll go with these songs – although No2 could also be No1 ;-)

1. So Long Marianne
2. Bird On The Wire
3. First We Take Manhattan 1988 Roskilde was played three times but not exactly a showcase for the violin but it does mention a "plywood violin"

3. Dance Me To The End Of Love (not sure - think it was only twice in three 2012 concerts - but it's a good violin song)
....I wish No 3 was The Window.... excellent violin song!

Hi Bev,

The third song is First We Take Manhattan (plywood vs. burning, which one is better?) 8)
Again, as far as I know - viewtopic.php?f=9&t=33064&start=15#p318644 - Dance Me to the End of Love has never been played three times a night. It was played twice on only 5 occasions (last time in L.A. in 2012). As time goes by, LC catalogue grows bigger, so no surprise that such repetitions became a rare thing.

P.S. Over to you, well done anyway!

Thanks Roman, and of course I would prefer a burning violin to a plywood one!

Now name a song and the confusing line within it.
And if you can’t understand what I’m implying then you will know the line ;-)

Thanks for both your replies; Steven’s answer isn’t what I had in mind but Rachel’s last line means just about the same as the one I want!

1. In my previous post in the last line I have mentioned one of the words in the line twice.
2. Give another word meaning “confused”.
3. Give another line meaning “you can’t understand what I’m implying”
or “which I don’t pretend to understand at all”.

.... and now without meaning to, I’ve mentioned another word in the line three times and that other (no 1) word again :)

This song has been consistently in the set list of the world tour and sung by ? ;-)
