Dear Leonard,

sometimes words are just too inadequate to express; so I cannot make clear what part you took in my cultural adolescence and shaping my understanding of arts, but be assured this is continually going on.

So I only want to thank you from heart for just being and may Time be good to you!!!

Sincerely, Dennis

Dear M. Cohen

This morning the angel in Jeanne-Mance Park was wearing its robe of glorious eastern light.

Over the years your poetry has accompanied me no matter where I was on our planet. You are our universal bard, constantly reminding us of the essential of our human experience.

I whish to thank you. I count on you to sing to us what it is like to be a hundred years old.

Love and blessings

Leonard left Los Angeles long before his birthday and has been
traveling. The following messages have been already received,
and he promised to write more later.

"Dear Jarkko,
I have just visited the Forum.
So many beautiful voices.
Thank you for letting me hear them.
Love
Leo"

He received also our birthday gift before his Birthday to his
present location:

"The package arrived this morning
deeply touched by the thoughtfulness, simplicity, and
elegance of these gifts
all the names
such a sense of solidarity
thank you
Leo"

I hope it's never too late to say - Happy Birthday, Mr. Cohen. My world and life would never be so rich and beautiful if your songs, poetry and wisdom were lost between millions of others.

This greeting comes from Ukraine:

"Dear Leonard,

My best congratulations on the occasion of your birthday.
I wish you good health, soul harmony, new songs and poems. Many happy returns of the day. For the first time I heard your song about three years ago. Strange as it may appear I had no chance to hear them before. The first song heard by me was "Dance Me To The And Of Love". What struck me most was the fact that in an absolutely unknown for me voice I heard something familiar,
something very close to my Slavonic soul, something sincere and dear. I became greally interested and got acquainted with your whole creative work, including novels and poetry. And I realized that my persception I was right. I accept all your song as my close friend's address to me, who is singing personally for me at this moment. I have never heard anything expressed so trustfully, with so great lyric emotion, honesty and noble courage. When I listen to your songs I recollet only one Russian singer, songwriter and poet Vladimir Visotsky who is loved by dozens of millions people in my country for his sincerity, creative honesty and great poetic talent. Quit unexpectedly for myself I realize that your songs sound in my house oftener that anybody elsis. Even respected by me r'n'blues take the second peace. I know that your creative work is widely known and cherished in my country. I am looking forward to October 25, 2004 the date when your CD "Dear Heather" will be presented to the public. Its appearance in my country is not being planned at this time.

Your sincerely.

Youri Slesarev, Ukraine"

I realize it´s a day after the event, I was busy yesterday but what the hey... Congrats Leonard, looking forward to hearing the new album. I´m confident there´s yet many a great album and book in you.

The received wisdom that Cohen writes "music to slit your wrists to" or whatever - I just don´t get it. To me, Leonard´s music has always been soothing and uplifting. He is one of the few true poets in popular music today. A great sense of melody as well.

Long may Father Cohen lavish his gifts upon us.

Dear Mr. Cohen:

My deep and abiding enthusiasm for your work extends from the time I stumbled upon a Canadian edition of The Spice-Box of Earth straight through listening again and again to Ten Songs. Your books and recordings have been my constant companions through several moves and many extended trips. Thank you. Without you and Mr. Zimmerman for company the years would have be empty as abandoned caves and as dull as an unsharpened knife. Happy Birthday. May you live to be 120. Chazak!

People have asked 'what would you say to him'? I don't know! Everything! nothing! Sad, happy, inane, crazy things. I wish for the opportunity. I wish for you, all that you wish for yourself, Leonard Cohen.
