"Next Tuesday, when the sun goes down, I will play the Moonlight Sonata backwards. This will reverse the effects of the world's mad plunge into suffering, for the last 200 million years."

There is no decent place to stand in this massacre
But if a woman should take your hand then go and stand with her

It's not my favourite line, but lines, and it's not from a song. Am I cheating here? Tell me if I am, though Leonard's "I wonder how many people in this city" (from "The Spice-Box of Earth") has remained an enduring pleasure to read and inspiration to write.
So here it goes....
I WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THIS CITY

I wonder how many people in this city
live in furnished rooms.
Late at night when I look out at the buildings
I swear I see a face in every window
looking back at me,
and when I turn away
I wonder how many go back to their desks
and write this down.

Andrew.

I love that inevitable twist that he does. Sounds like it was written in N.Y.C. If it's a favourite and it's Cohen, it seems fair game to me for inclusion here. It's still words on paper, and I could imagine it in a song, even with him never putting it there. I enjoyed reading it.

Dear Elizabeth,
It is a favourite, and it is Leonard Cohen, and it is "words on paper"(sic), and it is his poem, no "ifs" about it.

Did you take me literally on the "if," Andrew? That was a projected, "If/then" structure....."If" blah, blah, blah....[and since that criteria was, in fact, met....which I knew], "then".....[appropriate placement already in place].

P.S. I have the book. I recognized the poem. It was nice to read it here.

Well, I found a silver needle,
I put it into my arm.
It did some good,
did some harm.
But the nights were cold
and it almost kept me warm,
how come the night is long?

Let's meet tomorrow if you choose,
upon the shore, beneath the bridge,
that they are building on some endless river.
