Laurie...Am the proud owner of Sugar Fornaciari (that name has many possibilities, no wonder he changed it), Zuch& Co CD. Picked it up this morning on my traditional saturday morning Starbucks stop. Will get back to you later on about it....

p.s. I have much in common with Norah Jones....we both live in NY, we both grew up in the very same north dallas suburb and we both have indian roots.....I have mixed feeling about her music though.

Kush~

'zucchero' is the word Sugar in Italian. If I remember right, it was a nickname one of his teacher's gave him in grade school.
I forget what his real first name is at the moment....He another of those 'single-name' stars: Zucchero 8)
Hope you enjoy it!!

L
p.s. Trivia: Zucchero is tied to Bocelli via his old drummer, who became his record producer, who is now Bocelli's longtime manager; Michele Torpedine.

Of course the above is from me.

For some reason this portion of the board lets me be an idiot and post without signing in, where other sections prompt me when I try to post anonymously.

No need for explanations, dear. We know that you're an idiot no matter where you sign in.

I have mixed feeling about her music though.
I am probably the only person on the planet who does not know the sound of Norah Jones' voice. I don't listen to commercial radio, and heard her sing only once or twice. I loved it when I heard it, but then I kept reading how overplayed she was. Still, I imagine that it would be safe to get her first cd now. Now, that's it's done being played.

These would seem to be in conflict:
I am probably the only person on the planet who does not know the sound of Norah Jones' voice.

I don't listen to commercial radio, and heard her sing only once or twice. I loved it when I heard it,
On the other hand, I have never heard Norah Jones sing, so may be truly the 'only person on the planet' who does not know the sound of Norah Jones's voice. I've heard her talked about here in a positive way, but have never followed up on it. It sounded like she was a 'pop' singer more than anything else, so I wasn't really motivated.

What is it about her voice that you don't seem to care for, Kush?

I'd be interested to know as well. As I said, I've only heard her sing once or twice and the memory I have is that I loved her when I heard her. However, I've not heard her since and could not pick her out of a line-up of 10 other singers.

I like to get a little feed-back from those that are more familiar with an artist, before I run out to plunk down my $10 - 20.00

Laurie...thanks very much for bringing to my attention the Zucchero CD. It is outstanding and very much within the realms of my current musical interests. I have been playing it non stop. I like all the songs (except perhaps Diavolo in Me but I'll give it time).
My favorites so far: I lay Down (w/ John Lee Hooker), Baila Morena (w/ ????), Dune Mosse (w/Miles Davis), Hey Man (w/ BB King) and Cosi Celeste (w/ Cheb Mami - who is that????, she is terrific.).
Actually I thought the last track Miserere was a little out of place in this group. And whats the point in having both Pav and Bocelli on it? That was gimicky. The live track of Miserere on Romanza is far better and could have been included here.

Norah Jones is a little bit like Madeleine Peyroux IMO. Both are good, even perhaps very good (moot point) but the publicity they have gotten is quite out of proportion with their talent. I have Norah Jones second release (Feels like home) and most of the songs sound the same, very little variation in tempo and vocal range.
Her first album may be better - I actually heard it in a friends car a few years back and remember liking it.
But I really really like the duet she does with Willie Nelson on his recent album It Always Will Be. The vocals nicely complement and contrast each other and so does her piano and his guitar. The song - Dreams Come True, a low key jazz tune - may well be my favorite song of hers to date.

p.s. ADELMO RULES !!!

Ah, okay, Kush. Thanks. The likening to Madeleine Peyroux gets my attention. The 'sounds the same' thing has turned me away from a lot of other pop singers. The 'marketing' can definitely be misleading.

On the other hand, the 'duets' in the Zucchero cd sound very interesting. I love John Lee Hooker and B.B. King's singing, and have always really liked Miles Davis's music. The woman you mentioned, I've also never heard of. I love classical voices, so Pavarotti and Bocelli would sound great to me. A very [seemingly] eclectic grouping of people. What is the sound/voice that these listed people are linking up with?

Kush~

I am soooo glad you like Zucchero!!!

Hopefully the Starbucks exposure will truly get him the U.S. fan-base he deserves.

Last month or so on PBS there was a documentary on SUN Records. Alot of well known musicians came into the studios and did remakes of old Sun Records hits. In the documentary, Zucchero is one of those artists. I can't recall what song he sang, but I do remember it was awesome. He poured his heart into it. However when it came to putting together the cd that came from the documentary, he was pushed aside for someone 'more well known.' Bastards!! 8) And is not on it.

As for your new cd:

I pass by Miserere, too. It does not fit with the rest of the stuff. Especially when he squeezed in both Bocelli and Pavarotti.
Devil in Me, is sort of irritating.
I love the Hooker & M.Davis duets and Baila. Don't forget the toe-tapping Mama Get Real!! And Macy Gray's duet.....I'll just shut up 8)

It's funny though, I adore Cosi Celeste, when he sings it on his own. But that Cheb Mami's voice grates on me. Voices resonating (or not) with individuals is such a personal-preference thing.

So. Did I mention I am Really glad you like Zucch!??!!

later gater,
Laurie

Hello all,

I've heard an item recently about a new Peruvian tenor that is making inroads, does anyone know the name of this gentleman? The CBC (think NPR in Canada), played a piece recently and he was very good!. However, I didn't catch the name, only that he was from Peru.

Thanks for the info re: Norah Jones, as she was so talked about in the press, I avoided buying the record. I just remember part of a video where she was driving down a highway??? and at the time thought she sounded great. Too much press certainly can have a detrimental effect. I tend to steer clear of the 'overplayed' as one is likely to hear them 'somewhere', and not at home, after buying the CD.

huh you dont like Cheb Mami?? She is the highlight of that particular song. Funny think though.....I was not much taken in by Macy Gray's voice ....to each his/her own!! :)
John Lee Hooker sounds like ol' Moses himself - or the way I'd imagine him to sound. And my favorite lines so far come from Zuch/BB...

Hey Man
I see you walkin' just like me
On the far side of the road
Hey Man
Come and sing my song with me
On my side of the road.

(lyrics corrected)

Lizzytysh...I am not sure who to compare Zucchero's voice to....kinda bluesy. But I am sure Laurie - resident expert on all things Zucchero (and my fellow Member of The List) will be more than happy to provide some analogues for you :). (actually I dont mind at all being on a list with eminent personalities as bee, Tom and others.)

Linda...dont want to turn you off of Norah Jones....I think our biases always come into the picture when giving opinions. I was thinking that many folks could rightly claim Springsteen's Ghost of Tom Joad album as sounding the same and having no variation. Yet I absolutely love that album!! Although I'd say GOTJ has the sweeping narrative of americana as a hook to hang on.

Thanks Kush. I know what you mean about having a personal 'bias' that comes out in the opining of a record. Well, 75% of the worlds record buying public can't be wrong! As I'm not 'Norah Jones'd' out, I think it's probably a safe bet. You've had good instinct before, can't hurt it to give it a try. If I don't like it, I can put in the mobile with all the other discs I don't like.
