Hi MaryB and Roman,
the German translation of Sylvie's book is very good.
Some of the examples Mark Twain mentioned are obsolete.
Today "monster words" are used mainly in administrative language.
By the way "Unabhaengigkeitserklaerung" means "declaration of
independence" and that's not much shorter in English.

New book about Leonard Cohen in Poland

Hello, I want to share my joy with you - as the Leonard`s fan I always greet with joy all publications about my favourite artist - and a new book about this artist was just published in last days in Poland.
http://www.weltbild.pl/leonard-cohen-je ... #longDescr
Quotation from the description of the book :
" 'Leonard Cohen. I`m your man' it is a biography of the phenomenal poet and the songster written up to the standards of his talent. In her extensive, for profusely illustrated book Sylvie Simone is presenting the way of Leonard Cohen to the world hit charts, artistic work giving fruit with crowds of fans and highest awards, his stark choices concerning the spiritual life and personal vicissitudes.
Memories of important women in his life, of friends, of partners and conversation with Cohen are creating the unique story - about poetry, music, elaboratenesses of love, about the meaning of the life, about the religion. Cohen - the champion and the fencer of the word - was portrayed with words from interviews, his own poems (in original versions and the Polish translation), with songs.
Who was Susanne from the famous Leonard`s song? Why in his song did he say goodbye to beloved Marianne? Who are legendary Sisters of Mercy? What role in the life of the "short Canadian Jew" how they were talking about him, did a Buddhist spiritual leader? Many mysteries will become clear thanks to reading this - indeed extensive, because as many as 600 pages - of monograph."
Of course I ordered this book already - at least I suppose many news on it is repeated and well-known to me, but I must have every book about him
PS. by the way I am loving this photograph on the cover!
