From Conspiracy of Beards:
'
Hi everyone, how are you? There's a lot going on in beardom this week.
Its been making my head spin just trying to keep track of it all. On Friday
the 14th, for our last performance until the fall, we are singing at the
opening of the new documentary on our man. We are singing a short set before
the 7:00pm and the 9:50pm showings. It might sell out, so get your tickets
early.

If you're up early on Wednesday morning the 12th tune into KFOG 104.5 /
97.7 FM at 7:00am we will be performing one song live on the morning show.
And later in the evening on Wednesday we will be on KQED's Spark at 7:30pm.
This episode will repeat on Friday the 14th at 11:00pm and Sunday the 16th
at 11:30pm...

And if that's not enough for you, on Thursday the 13th a number of
beards will be performing as Blood Fountain and Cj Darling for Scot
Velardo's show of recent paintings at Catalyst Cocktails, 312 Harriet St.,
from 7 to 10pm. See the attached card for more information...

Well, that's it for now. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Thank you for
all your support. Ciao....

The kindenss of stranger musicians

Dear all -

Regardless of what one may think about their musical or interpretive abilities, I don't think the helpfulness of the Conspirators can be denied.

After an e-mail correspondence, a member of same has sent me, in advance of payment, a copy of the limited edition live cd, accompanied by some wonderful postcard fliers advertising their events, which, if I am not mistaken, betray the use of rubber stamps (another reason to celebrate the Facially Hirsute Cabal).

I think the versions vary in quality, and one doesn't work at all, but at the very least they challenge the complacency of our relationship with the songs and, at the best (Who by Fire, You Know Who I Am) offer powerful and moving interpretations.

Much of the disc has a lovely, sometimes messy, exuberance to it which provides a wholesome antidote to some more pious renditions.

I hope to see them in the UK sometime. Either that, or, what with the ferment of Cohen activity at the moment, I'll have a nationality transplant and become Canadian. Any jobs out there?

Really enjoyed revisiting this old thread just now! Folks were reasonable to be skeptical and protective of Leonard Cohen's poetic art and good name. We have really worked hard as a choir to be gentle stewards of Leonard's words. The choir has improved a whole lot sense our first performance of 3 songs with 8 or 9 guys back in 2003. We are now about 30 singers, and with weekly rehearsals, and some really talented, dedicated musicians/composers, as well as the leadership of our amazing choir director, Daryl Henline, we now have about 25+ quality arrangements in our repertoire. We are performing on bigger staged to bigger audiences, and introducing Leonard Cohen's masterful music to a whole new generation who seemed to have missed out on his magic. Our early recordings leave a lot to be desired, but fortunately there are more recent recordings that help make up for that learning phase. We are now in our 12th season, and as a non-profit organization we are on track to sing for a number of good causes this year.

Thanks for all of your support!

I really enjoyed the experience of seeing the Conspiracy of Beards perform a few years back when they played before Sharon Robinson in San Francisco a few years ago. I had no idea what to expect and was astounded at some of the harmonies and voices of these men.
