Dear Leonard,

Well another year has gone by and here I am again with my birthday gift to you of a portrait. In the last few years coincidentally you have a new album pending at this time of the year which inspires my birthday drawings to you! This year it is “Old Ideas” so I thought a comparison with old and young would be a good ‘old (new) idea’. Maybe some of the new songs were originally old ideas. From the past to the present......looking backward to look forward.

There are about forty years gathered together here in the space between these two faces. So many wonderful words of song and poetry in that time. You have shared lots of them with us and for that you have my gratitude forever. I can’t imagine a day without your words in it. I find words that soak into my ears are whispered not yelled.....and hopefully my pastel artwork will do the same for you. Hear through my hand the passing years and the timeless sounds of the shadows.

I hope next year we can sing Happy Birthday to you again, just like in Barcelona 2 years ago (or some lucky sods in France last year). Be careful with strenuous exercises as we can't wait to see the kid with a crazy dream on stage again. May love keep the darkness away from you.

You're an inspiration and ,like most people on this forum, I listen to your voice every day.It was a real surprise to hear my youngest daughter sing," i crawl to you baby like a dog in heat...." from the back of the car but we're hoping she's forgotten.
Best wishes and i'm still amazed at how you can see a camera lens at a concert and gaze straight at it to the extent that the same daughter was convinced your photograph stared at her every time she passed it.
