Oooo, Hydriot, I am desperately trying to restrain myself from asking you what 15 minutes of fame you had when you were 13.

I did something on television, seen by most of the country as it was a very big occasion (even seen and remembered by my future wife, who was then ten years old).
But afterwards, walking down streets, people would point at me and whisper "That is the boy who...", and I suddenly realised they knew all about me but I knew nothing about them. Call it paranoia if you like, but it made me feel vulnerable and at a disadvantage, and very quickly the attention of strangers became a hateful intrusion on my privacy.
It has had a seminal influence on my life, a healthy influence I like to think. Having "been there, done that" at an early age I have never been infected with this ghastly obsession with celebrity, this weird idea that you are nobody if you are not worshipped by the masses. I have a high regard for recluses like the late great J D Salinger and John Fowles ... and of course our own wonderful (and very much alive) Leonard, who turned his back on fame when he retired to Mt Baldy.

That's a very good description of the dark side of being well known and why so many people in the public eye make themselves inaccessible to the masses. However, wealth and all that it can buy, cars, airplanes, villas, treasures etc.power, privilege, prestige, doors that open for you, being treated like royalty, is something that few but the famous get to experience but many would like to.

Well, I wasn't paid anything for my performance, so I suppose I missed out on all the good things that fifteen minutes of fame can bring, and just experienced the bad.
I'd also point out that the correlation between wealth and fame is not great. The vast majority of wealthy people are not famous. I would say less than 1% of wealthy people achieved their wealth by making themselves famous. The classic route to wealth is by founding a business and making it supremely successful.

The next island on from Hydra, Spetses, is where John Fowles taught in the fifties at Greece's only British-style 'public' school. He set his book The Magus there. I have climbed the ridge in search of Conchis's villa Bourani, but could nowhere find the salle d'attente.

Fowles was one of my favorite writers and I loved The Magus. Staying in Lyme Regis at his house would be a dream come true-and I intend to visit Spetses on a future trip to Greece.

"I found him by the stage last night
He was breathing his last breath
A bottle of wine and a cigarette
Was all that he had left
I can see you make the music
’cause you carry a guitar
God help the troubadour
Who tries to be a star
So play the chords of love, my friend
Play the chords of pain
If you want to keep your song,
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t play the chords of fame
I seen my share of hustlers
As they try to take the world
When they find their melody
They’re surrounded by the girls
But it all fades so quickly
Like a sunny summer day
Reporters ask you questions
They write down what you say
So play the chords of love, my friend
Play the chords of pain
If you want to keep your song,
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t play the chords of fame
They’ll rob you of your innocence
They will put you up for sale
The more that you will find success
The more that you will fail
I been around, I’ve had my share
And I really can’t complain
But I wonder who I left behind
The other side of fame
So play the chords of love, my friend
Play the chords of pain
If you want to keep your song,
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t play the chords of fame"
