I used to hear S&G, Joan Baez, Gordon Lightfoot a lot at one time. But then it got old......LC is headed that way too now it seems.

I have heard Lightfoot maybe 8-10 times in the last 4 years or so. I used to hear him regularly before that. Canada's 2nd greatest songwriter ? Some will argue Canada's greatest balladeer and melody-maker !!

When I say "heard" I meant heard his discs. I don't know if he is still active. I vaguely remember he came to Dallas for a concert around 1997 but I didnt go.
He has written so many great songs and rarely a bad song ever, although mostly folksy. I've been planning to replace the 'If You Could Read My Mind' album that someone 'stole'
from me, for about a year now.....maybe I'll do it this weekend.

from me, for about a year now.....maybe I'll do it this weekend.Gords Gold and Gord's Gold vol. 2 are excellent collections....I have both on cassette tape. Vol. 2 is more pop/electronic arrangements of songs that were earlier done as folk acoustic. I would strongly recommend that. I also have the United Arttists 2 CD Collection which is essentially his first 4 albums. About 50 % of the songs are outstanding on that but you get to hear many of his very early songs (e.g., Magnificent Outpouring, Affair on 8th Avenue, Bitter Green, Home from the Forest and many others).

I'd like to mention another great Canadian songwriter, whose music was good enough to be "lifted" from parties in the late 60's: I know, for it was at my party in 1969 when someone stole my copy of her first album. She has a painting of Leonard Cohen on the Files. She has written one of the most covered songs, "Both Sides Now". Yes, it's Joni Mitchell.

I read this post on the Beach Boys Britain message board yesterday. It was written by a regular correspondent :
"Gordon Lightfoot is in serious condition in a Canadian hospital following abdominal surgery.Responsible for the hits Sundown, Carefree Highway, If You Could Read My Mind, The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald and lots of other great stuff.He has continued to tour and record albums since the early 60s. I pray he pulls through."

I was checking last week to see where gordon was touring and he is touring as I speak and it was a very full schedule.
I've seen about 8 times when he passes through Seattle (70-92). A few of those concerts he was so drunk he could not remember the lyrics and in the middle of the song he would turn to his band and have to ask what verse was next. It was interesting to listen to the audience shout out a song that they would like to here and the one that got the most shouts was "Steel Rail Blues" but he woukld never do it. I'm sure the request came from all those lonely transplants from the east coast as that song really spoke to them.
Kush spoke of "The affair of 8th ave" and that is just an incredible song!!!
Gordon's song "pussywillows cattails" is one of my favorites and if anyone has heard Kenny Rankin sing this song off of his Silver morning album will be amazed at the beauty of the lyrics and his voice.
