Ah, I’ve just remembered additional different ways I’ve done art over the years. I’ve physically painted with both Paasche and Olympus brands of airbrush for many years in the past but not lately. I have poured inks and mixed media to represent real and abstract forms – lots of happy accidents! A half planned one is the desktop wallpaper on my laptop. Also I’ve used rice paper and Chinese and Sumi brushes for oriental brush painting also colour textured rice paper with pastels. I’ve even used candle wax as a resist and for texture when drawing and painting in ink :)

I’ve today just taken these three photos below as examples. The first one is some my oriental brush paintings and the next two were mentioned in my previous post about painting on masonite and making pottery/ceramics.

Sumi-&-Chinese-brush-painting.jpg

The one below is painted in a pointillistic style with acrylics on masonite.
I’ve made the frame/border around it also in masonite; the painting and frame sit on top of another layer of it.
And no, I didn’t just put LC’s United Hearts hand symbol there today. It’s been in that place for over 12 years!

pointillism-acrylic-on-masonite1.jpg

With the image below, the two outer items were all hand built from terracotta clay, glazed and fired. The centre rectangle was made with ironstone clay and carved into with pieces attached, fired, then all of it was painted with metallic paints. The photo is a bit dull here but it shines in normal light.

Now I’m getting back to doing portraits of my ancestors.

Lisa, you mentioned the word ‘intriguing’, and now I’m intrigued :)

bev, you are so amazingly creative that i find it difficult to select suitable words with which to respond. i am joyously flabbergasted. you are exceptionally versatile in your choice of media, not afraid of mistakes or failure, obviously have an ambitious desire to experiment and learn - and that's all one needs in order to achieve success. you might consider opening an exhibition of your work, i am sure it would be attended by more than a few people.

the 'wormhole' series looks jolly interesting, at least the earlier episodes. it does seem from the titles as though the producers were running out of ideas towards the end, but perhaps they are ok. i will give them a try in due course. if they are anything like the carl sagan series there will be no disappointment. that morgan freeman fellow seems to be in everything, but he's not an unlikeable sort of guy.

thanks for showing pictures of your art, and for pointing us to the tv series. it's always uplifting when someone shares things and uses energy on this forum. without input from people it would quickly fall apart and be forgotten. or, as i wrote on a piece of paper when climbing out of bed this morning: the past is a quicksand into which everything disappears forever. a rather pessimistic thought with which to start the day, but 'what makes us who we are?' - as is the title of one of these 'wormhole' episodes.

concerning lisa's immaculate conception. it is not impossible in a 'one step beyond' existence that an entity of high intelligence could be placed here amongst us to offer guidance and inspiration via intellectual contributions to our otherwise unenlightened society. there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in our philosophies. i would like to believe this is true.

Thank you Geoffrey, for your most kind words about my art diversification endeavours :D
I had so much fun doing them. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary lately. I used to enter and also judge (not on the same occasion ;-) ) art shows, exhibitions and do commissions for people over the years but haven't done so for some time now. As John Lennon once said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".

At the moment, I'm content with my plan (hopefully life is as well) to do portraits of my ancestors using whatever techniques or materials best describe them so that will more than take up a lot of my time.
[btw - you don't happen to have another photo of Rollo beside the statue of him in Ålesund, Norway, do you? (wink) ]

That's a most expressive portrait full of feeling you've done of that unknown gentleman 8)

Ah, as well as Through The Wormhole, shades of The X-Files :) "The truth is out there" and "I want to believe".

"The truth is out there" and "I want to believe".
thank you, bev - for all the kind things you write. it's nice for me to show that i can do portraits of other people besides leonard cohen. truth is i can draw anything i want, so can anyone. there is a poster here called alan who claims he can't make pictures, but he is mistaken. he is maybe thinking about what he discerns as good quality, and yet there is no such thing as either good or bad quality when it comes to making pictures. young children at playschool who draw stick people know this, and they produce masterpieces. it's just visual images, entertainment for one's eyes to look at. what is good or bad is only an individual's subjective opinion. if one draws a luckless picture intending it to be of someone well-known, it is merely an interpretation, and an interpretation can be art. we have moved on from the narrow-minded nazis who were unable to recognise picasso's pictures as not too bad at all. some of the best pictures i have ever seen were drawn by people who have never drawn before. they are so genuine, so innocent and naive that their honesty surpasses anything an accomplished artist can produce. i prefer not to be called 'artist' because the word is mostly connected to ego and arrogance. i've said this before. bob dylan said: "i think a poet is anybody who wouldn't call himself a poet!" - and i think maybe the same can be said about artists. then again, maybe i've seen too many episodes of the twilight zone ;-)
-------------------------------
apologies for the rant. to change the subject, here is a picture taken today. even though wearing a face-mask i was recognised while standing on an escalator, and they asked for permission to take a selfie. as usual i said ok as long as i was sent a copy. we knew each other, he did not tell me when he came he was a stranger. we even went for a coffee afterwards and discussed how rare it is to find gloves in a glove compartment, is god an atheist - deep intellectual things like that. then we parted, i went to 'moa lets eat' and had beef stroganoff with cherry tomatoes and spinach salad. the lady asked if i wanted potatoes or rice with it, and i chose the latter. for dessert i had warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream and some strange exotic fruit - washed down with a black coffee. i have to go now.

And here I thought that I was just a fabulously successful laboratory experiment. Although having divine origins may appeal to some people, I think I prefer my version of events, and thus I shall continue to operate under that illusion. Besides, the responsibilities inherent in your scenario would be far too much of a burden for me to bear, as well as being a rather futile exercise.

Bev, thanks for sharing about the "Wormhole" series. It sounds like something we would enjoy, I am perplexed that I never heard of it, and will definitely look into acquiring it. Geoffrey recalled Carl Sagan's epic series, "The Cosmos." We had that on 8-track tapes, but wore them out (plus like everyone else, we no longer have an 8-track player). However, we do still have "The Cosmos" companion book, and I go through it a couple of times a year when the mood strikes. You are so right about avoiding science discussions in mainstream publications. A long-time client who is in the publishing industry once put in a stint at the company that owned "Scientific American." "Scientific American" was once a superlative magazine. Each issue had about six or seven in-depth articles on dissimilar subjects. I would first, of course, read the ones covering subjects I was interested in, and then gravitate to the unfamiliar, I learned much from those articles. However, at some point, in the 1990s I noticed that the articles had become shorter, and alarmingly, written in a more casual style. I asked my client about it, and his reply was, "the company felt that people no longer have the patience to wade through long articles with scientific jargon, so they made the decision to dumb it down." That may have been the first time I heard the phrase "dumb it down.' RIP, Scientific American.

Ah, yes, thank you guys, for the reminder about Carl Sagan's "Cosmos".
It was a 'must see' for me on TV back then. He really got me more interested in 'things beyond' 8)

I have no new artwork to share, but I do have a photo of a rather fun (and absolutely real) warning sign that I saw yesterday while driving along a road in a wooded area -- it is not something that most people would encounter in their daily travels, I should think.

Good one, Lisa,
After seeing your sign I can't help but reciprocate with these Aussie signs ;-)

australian-road-signs.jpg

Below is a triple animal sign on the road crossing the Nullarbor between Adelaide and Perth.
btw - Nullarbor is Latin for 'no trees' just the opposite to the dense woodland in your photo :)
road-signs-nullarbor-highway-australia.jpg

And as we are speaking of animals, below is a stained glass painting I did as a commission of some my local birds, Lorikeets. They sometimes sit and talk to each other very loudly on my verandah, especially when it's raining :)

Geoffrey,
Interesting to see Leonard in that way from an alternate perspective, so to speak.
You know, I always love your most applicable captions you add to your artwork - they enhance what you do 8)

And that's a great video - what a beautiful place to live in!
