return fares to Athens vary according to airlines. I booked with http://www.easyjet.com and got seats for just under £100. The prices vary with this budget airline and are cheaper midweek and the earlier you book. Try also british airways, http://www.ba.com for more fixed prices. I think their flights are from about £140. The names of definite travellers are on the Hydra 2005 link on the front page of the files. I'm sure more people are still deliberating so the numbers are bound to go up.
We have some difficulties with planes here (395 Euros per person) so we'll end in train for 120 Euros per person, 50 hours across the Balkans. As you're closer to Greece, it's harder to come
An idea occured to give up, but we still keep it going...?

I would take the train, treat it a a part of your holiday and enjoy the scenary along the way. It beats crossing Europe by bus or driving your own car! My family of 4 once went all the way to the Czech republic in a small car with a small overnight tent in the back ! It was more of an endurance test towards the end. We were jealous when we saw travellers on the Eurolines bus heading home.
I agree Margaret! I like to travel, and that's why I prefer train/car to flying. I must say I already begun to feel travel excitement - I mean, I never was in eastern Croatia, and now I'll travel all across it, following the Sava river, and then the whole Serbia from north to south to Macedonia, and the whole Macedonia to Greece and then whole Greece from the Macedonian border to the sea! That will be the Balkan tour for meWow! Where's the train? How long I must wait?

It Is Done!!!
It's done, it's done, it's done, it's DONE!!!
My flight is booked ~ and, if anyone gets a really good deal, do NOT tell me about it! I'm not going to be watching the fares to see how much more I could have saved, had I waited. In June, children here are out of school and people are wanting to go to Europe; people in Europe are going on vacation; gas costs may be risen by then; etc. ~ and I now have peace of mind that my flight is expecting me
. I'm leaving a day earlier than originally planned, so now meeting Rob in Wales, and another dear friend, elsewhere, plus a few others in their homes is all the more likely.
I'm flying into London, and I believe my friend [Phil], whom I came to know on the Sony Board [some of you may remember her] will probably pick me up at the airport, and I'll probably spend the day [and night?] with her, and then by train to wherever else.
What a tension experience it was to book it. The flight went up by $100 just in the time it took me to check with my supervisor about leaving a day earlier and talk about a couple, other related things. Whew ~ it's done! I'm relieved. Now, if we can all gather for anti-crash/anti-terrorist prayers, all will be splendid
. Partisan ~ please opt out of this prayer circle
.
I arrive in the morning of Friday, June 3 ~ and leave to return on Saturday, June 18 around Noon.
It's done!!!
Love,
Elizabeth

Actually i have become a very nervous flyer over the last few years. I am not worried about terrorism. Rather each time an airline talks about cost cutting i just think of their maintenance schedules. From a purely personal point of few i need a few terrorist incidents and a general collapse of world oil prices to enable me to go. Maybe then the flights will cost the 99p i can afford. Oh the joys of being a penniless student.

Dear Lizzy,
I'm so glad you finally fixed the flight!
Also, I'm equally jealous of the whole lot of you swanning off to Hydra while I'm stuck in Scotland:there's a Pink Floyd song which sums it up, "Wish You Were Here".
Lizzy, play that bouzouki C.D. I sent you when you're flying over the pond.
Yer Andrew.

I did it! I finally got the flights booked! John and I will be in Hydra from Wednesday 8th to Wednesday 15th June. (Lizzie ~ Sue & Mark are coming too
). First accommodation we approached was full, so at the moment we are sleeping on the beach, but I'm sure something will turn up
Besides, I can think of worse places to sleep out in Summer!

No, this is definitely an adults only trip, Lizzie
The girls will be in the middle of exams at that time, and the boys have much better things to do than tagging along with us oldies.
We have accommodation now, too, so will not be roughing it on the beach after all!
