Hi all

Although the reforestation in Hydra is an interesting idea
i don't think it will be possible for us to organize something
like that with all the laws that protect the island etc.

I think a donation to the Hydra hospital is the best option.

Just contributed my money via PayPal.
Very much looking forward to sitting on the bench, maybe next year!
I think that giving the surplus money to the hospital is an excellent idea.
I just wondered if we could also consider giving a small donation to Hydra Ark, an organisation which tries to care for the animals on Hydra. The hospital is a really worthwhile cause, but the cats, dogs donkeys etc need help too!!

Thank you Cilla for the information about HydraArk, I didn't know about it.
I support your suggestion, if it is possible, I'd also like to help them.
And we know Leonard does care about animals - eg. in the documentary of Armelle Brusq is Leonard talking about the dogs of Lorca taken by him to the vet. And then of course there is the famous "Cat Whisperer" case: http://1heckofaguy.com/2010/01/19/leona ... whisperer/

I too am in favor of some/all of our excess monies going to HydraArk.

I know from personal experience how difficult it is for animal shelters to raise funds, especially in the present economic climate and with so many competing humanity-based charities competing for assistance. A few thousand dollars would likely be insignificant in a hospital/medical center budget, but it would represent meaningful funding for an animal organization like HydraArk. Just my two cents' worth.

Thanks for your positive responses!
I have emailed Hydra Ark to make sure they are still operating. Their website looks up to date, but I thought it would be a good idea to check.
I'll post a message when (or if) I get a response.

Just had another idea....last time I went to Hydra (in 2012) the donkeys / mules in the town waiting to carry tourists were standing in full sun. Would a donkey shelter be a good idea? Wouldn't cost much, and would make a lot of difference to their lives!

Not many trees on Hydra seafront / port.....! But relentless sun - the mules stand there for hours!

As above, I wondered if some money could maybe go to Hydra Ark, who work hard to improve the lives of the animals, including wildlife, on Hydra.

I have emailed them and confirmed that the organisation still exists, and just said that I am considering ways to raise funds, but no promises. I haven't committed us to anything!

I have had a lovely reply - they are still working hard, relying on volunteers, and (apart from their website) there is loads of info, stories and photos on Facebook under 'HydraArk'.

From their email to me - "We have plans for large animal vets to come and work with all the equines on island during October. And at the end of October, we will have a visit from another group of vets for a TNR program for the cats. This fall, one of our volunteers is going to update and put some new life into our website."

I have an email address for HydraArk.

Thank you to those of you who have responded positively to this idea.

Hydra Bench: what a wonderful idea! I know Hydra very well and have been there many, many times. I also saw LC's house. I'm new on the forum, and I'm so glad
that I have just come in time to contribute to this project by sending money via PayPal. I'm sure that I will sit on that bench one day!

I appreciate supporting HydraArk as well as the hospital on Hydra and will gladly make contributions, too.

Donata.
