The Way I Think of Her
The deserted road ahead: morning fog, a stone wall
overhung with apple trees in blossom. "And ghosts?"
No. However, I saw a sudden apparition of goats
as Brother Giuseppe herded them round the corner.
I recalled being with Maria, bees a-buzz in blossom.
"And do you still dream of Maria. After all this time?"
Father, I dreamed I fell asleep on her warm bosom.
"Bible study will cleanse you of unclean thoughts."
Then, will I replace such thoughts with other doubts?
"My son, there's no room for doubt on the true road."
I shivered, saw the cold road, apple blossom, ghosts.

I am reading an excellent autobiography at the moment by John Cornwell called Seminary Boy.
This poem reminds me of that... and my own Catholic education... now a piece of an archaic and sometimes charming history...
