i agree that there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between a TV and a computer with a big screen. :)

Cheers! Love the Jimi Hendrix one, too -- very striking, with great colours! Have a good trip.

How about a musical interlude? Not by me, but by a phenomenal acoustic guitarist from Australia, Tommy Emmanuel. I saw Mr. Emmanuel perform live in concert recently, and he was amazing -- his talent and energy is thrilling and inspiring! His music defies genres, being a mixture of blues, rock, classical, world music, jazz, pop... Here he is playing his own version of "Classical Gas" (originally an instrumental pop-classical hit written and performed in 1968 by Mason Williams, which was a staple of classic rock/pop radio for many years), with a bit of a medley thrown in for fun. While it may not be Gangnam Style, it's far from a melancholic dirge! Enjoy!

i am writing this in a word file, and will try to paste it onto the forum. tried several times to write directly, but for some reason my message disappears each time. seems to happen nine times out of ten. so frustrating! the only thing i can imagine is causing this must be a faulty mouse. will buy a new one when the shops open tomorrow.

Nice picture of Kurt Cobain -- love the colours, great soulful expression. Hopefully you've solved your technical difficulties in posting.

But, perhaps more importantly, did you watch the Tommy Emmanuel video for which I provided a link? I don't post music videos lightly -- they are usually spectacular in some respect, and, I believe, well worth watching. I assure you -- and everyone else who watches it -- that you will be astounded at Tommy Emmanuel's mastery of the guitar -- it is a rollicking, magnificient performance! You (Geoffrey) and I had previously discussed the use of the thumb for fretting, and Emmanuel uses that technique to great effect in a few places (as well as using pretty much every other guitar technique that exists!). I love that video, and I want other people to see it, to share the joy! :D

hello. that musician has certainly mastered his instrument. i watched the video several times, and it seemed to become even more enjoyable with each successive viewing. not sure what the white oblong-shaped marking on the 12th fret is for, but it's probably a guide to help him quickly find the right place to put his fingers. yes, a different genre to 'gangnam style', so unfair to compare. as long as it's music, preferably upbeat, not too heavily jazz-like, then it's all good. this guitarist is great, and i understand why you like his music so much.

my technical problems have been solved; it was the mouse, as i suspected. all good now, but soon a new computer will be needed. the hard disk is full, too much software, continually has to be freed up to make a little more room. there's no way i have space for windows 12 when it arrives this autumn.

also, the trip on tuesday to stordal was lovely, although the weather grey. we stopped at a cafe in sjøholt on the way back and my friend bought me a chicked wrap with black coffee, because i had helped him. yesterday i was with a bunch of friends at borgundgavle cafe and museum, nice sunshine, then visited my family for home-made carrot cake with icing on top, plus more black coffee. today i have been to the shopping mall to buy a new mouse and mouse-mat. nobody here is probably interested in how i fill my days, but i am communicative by nature, especially after drinking black coffee.

PS:
i wrote a much longer and more sensible response to the guitarist video, twice - and it's such a pity it kept disappearing.

I also enjoy that Tommy Emmanuel video the more I watch it. He packs so much music and technique and skill and WOW-factor into that four and a half minutes that it is difficult to catch and appreciate it all at once -- it's almost overwhelming -- but after a few listens, it all becomes clearer, everything fits together, and the brilliance of his performance really shines. It's great fun, too!

It is generally customary, I believe, on a steel-string acoustic guitar, to have some sort of fret marker dots on the 12th fret (and on a bunch of other frets, too! Classical guitars, on the other hand, are ususally dotless), but in this case, likely in addition to being a fret-marker, it is a signature inlay put there by the maker of Emmanuel's guitar, Maton, and it is a Mother of Pearl block engraved with the letters "C.G.P.", which stands for "Certified Guitar Player." That is a title that was bestowed upon Tommy Emmanuel by Chet Atkins, and Maton puts this "C.G.P." inlay on the 12th fret of all of their "Tommy Emmanuel Model" guitars, which Tommy helped to design. For more info, if anyone cares (and to show that I am not making any of this up), here's a link to the Maton guitars website, and to an article about the CGP designation.

On other subjects, glad you had a nice trip! You are, however, correct in that I am not particularly interested in the mundane details of your daily life (I'd be more interested in knowing what kind of museum you were at than who you hung out with and what you ate). However, since you mentioned it, I will say that I am also fond of carrot cake (with cream cheese icing), although I've not had any for a while, and I would not eat a "chicked wrap" if you meant "chicken", for I am one of those witless vegetarians of which you previously spoke (well, mostly, anyway -- vegetarian, that is, not witless!).

Have a great weekend!

thank you for all of the information. you really are an exceptional person, lisa.

yes, i made a typing error. meant to write chicken, not chicked. the cafe we frequently visit, if the weather is fine, is situated in 'sunnmøre museum'. local people call it 'borgundgavle'. there are probably youtube videos about it. it's just a collection of old houses taken from all over norway. you can go inside them, old shops, school houses, churches, cottages, you name it - all in a big area of natural beauty, if you like that sort of thing, with ducks and swans on a lake. a lot of viking boats there as well. it's ok if you are interested in the ancient past, doesn't do much for me though. my friends and i usually have coffee and snacks in the cafe first, and then just walk to one of the benches in the sunshine and talk about anything that comes into our heads. it's usually me that leads the conversation.

the cafe is actually part of a large entrance area inside a multi-storied building where one can buy tickets. we never do that, though, we just buy refreshments from the cafe and sit on the balcony or near one of the windows. i did buy a ticket once and explored all the rooms, but it wasn't very interesting. one room was an exhibition of mannequins wearing clothes from bygone eras, another was filled with old tools, another with an old printing press, old cameras, newspapers, even a projector screen showing vintage black and white cine films. lots of other dull items.

i like it best when we meet in the shopping centre called 'moa amfi', that's where i shine, never get bored. it's a wonderful place, fantastic. even when i'm driving there, as i get closer i feel the energy already beginning to trickle into my soul. i park outside if the weather's dry, but if it's wet i park beneath the centre. there are three massive parking areas underneath the shops, and there are lifts or long moving staircases that carry people up to the first floor. that's where you see all the lights and the happy people, that is where hours of pleasure begins, and my body at once is filled with a crescendo of intense joy and excitement. it's just so wonderful, there is no place in the world that can equal such a delightful experience. there is no comparison. that's why i like it better than going to the museum looking at old stuff.
