it's not a cry that you hear tonight, it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah.

shake off that negativity; forget those melancholic dirges. fill the room with loud energetic songs that inspire the creative process :)

I only watched the first few minutes of Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker" -- I found it to be too dark and unpleasant.

When it comes to portrayals of the Joker in films, Jack Nicholson gets my top vote: his version is a great mixture of humour and menace. And, I love Jack Nicholson -- I'm a big fan of many of his movies, and so I am admittedly biased on this one!

How could I not? Classic moment in film! 8)

Mind you, although Jack was great in Batman and The Shining, my all-time favourite Nicholson movie is Wolf. I absolutely love that movie! It also features other actors that I very much like, including James Spader and Christopher Plummer. It's such a treat! In fact, now that I'm talking about it, I think I will watch it this weekend!

thank you for these messages. so interesting to learn of the actors and type of movies that are enjoyed. apart from 'the shining' (1980) and the first 'joker' (2019) movie, the others that were mentioned i have not seen.
because 'the dark knight' (2008) received good reviews i tried a few times to watch it, but turned it off after a short while each time.
i don't have a TV, 'netflix', or anything like that, only a local cinema and some free streaming websites. it's good to occasionally escape reality for an hour or two :)

What do you watch stuff on -- your computer? It's nice to have a TV with a reasonable sized screen and a good sound system (equipped with wi-fi) for watching the occasional movie or concert (or whatever one chooses), rather than watching things on a computer or a phone/tablet. You have previously made derogatory comments about TVs...

However, it is certainly not like the old days when "television" meant mostly crappy, mindless network TV programmes complete with annoying commercials. Nowadays, a TV is just a piece of hardware that one can use to watch carefully selected and often really good stuff! For instance, the other night, I watched a wonderful Masterclass with Alfred Brendel (a famous classical pianist) working with some students playing a couple of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which provided some beautiful and inspiring musical moments, as well as some very interesting and educational information about Beethoven's sonatas and piano playing. It was like having a private music lesson from one of the best musicians in the world! I find that kind of thing to be great for my energy and creativity -- it encourages me to play my instruments with more focus and passion, and/or simply to engage more fully in the wonderful music that I listen to! I just happened to watch it on my TV.

That's a great film, too! As I noted, I like a lot of Nicholson's films, but I have a soft spot for Wolf for various personal reasons!

yes, i watch stuff on my computer. the screen is huge. not sure why i don't have a TV. i only know i don't like it, don't have time for it - and don't have any use for it. when i last had a TV, many years ago, there were but three stations. of course everything's different now. i visit friends and have noticed they can choose from a wide selection of channels, but i can't seem to garner any interest for that appliance.

everyone is allowed to be themselves. i keep away from pork, dislike jazz music, never follow or participate in sport, refuse vaccinations and stay quiet when people discuss politics. on the other hand i enjoy music with energy, reading psychology, following criminal proceedings, making delicious meals and socialising. i am just me, with my likes and dislikes - no different from anyone else.

I feel the same way about anti-vaxxers.

You don't like or want a TV and have no use for it, but, sometimes, as you readily admit, you use your computer for exactly the same things that a lot of people use their TVs for -- that was my point. Your watching videos or movies on your "huge" computer screen is exactly the same as someone else watching videos or movies on their TVs -- you are simply using a different "appliance" to do the same things! Neither one is better or worse or more or less virtuous.

I was not trying to convince you to buy a TV or asking for a detailed account of your life or your personal beliefs, I was simply suggesting that your dislike of "television" seems to be based on a rather antiquated conception of TV, and not on the fact that modern wi-fi and internet connected TVs are essentially just large computer screens, and often used in the exact same ways and for the exact same things that you sometimes do with your computer!
