Invitation to our next Hydra Meetup (May 25-28, 2023)

Dear friends,

meeting on Hydra on a biannual basis has been a long tradition in our community. The pandemic forced a pause since our last gathering in 2019 but now we are more than happy to announce that registration is now open for our meet-up on Hydra which will take place from

Thursday May 25 until Sunday May 28 in 2023.

Whereas the previous gatherings all took place on the first weekend in June a religious holiday in Greece plus another big event on Hydra forced us to move the dates to the ones shown above. The dates chosen are well before the start of the tourist season which means we can avoid higher prices and temperatures and a significantly more crowded island.

As in previous years this will not be a fully organised event but rather be a get together of like minded people - all sharing the same interest in Leonard Cohen and his music and poetry.

Nonetheless we already are in the process of planning several activities.

There will be a screening at the Cinema Club on one or two evenings depending on the number of participants.

There will be boat trips - around the island during the day and a sunset tour in the evening.

For those not familiar with Hydra yet there will be the opportunity to join a guided walk around town.

And last but not least Lakis promised to take us to one of his now infamous guided excursions to the mainland. The exact route is still being worked on.

All details about these special activities including prices will be available next spring. Due to the very dynamic economic situation right now it’s not possible to put down any estimates at the moment. But please be assured - we will try our best to keep everything within reasonable limits.

The people at Cafe Roloi have been incredibly hospitable to our group over the years and are happy to welcome us once again in 2023. So we will have a central place to meet, chat and make plans for the day and evenings.

In previous years we all could enjoy the warm evenings with self made music and sing-alongs at the Cafe Roloi so please bring your guitars if you like. Please note that no electric amplifiers are allowed in any public areas on the island. So all instruments need to be acoustic.

Of course we will provide you with infos about how to get there and where to find the best restaurants and places. Since this is an unofficial gathering all travel arrangements need to be made by the participants themselves though.

To register please send an email (please NO PMs) to

Cohen-Hydra-Event@gmx.com

The registration fee is 10€ per person and non refundable. It will be forwarded as a donation to the Cinema Club and the Leonard Cohen Bench Maintenance Funds. Payments can be made via SEPA bank transfer within the SEPA zone in Europe or PayPal from outside the SEPA zone. Details will be provided in the responding email to your initial email.

After receiving the registration fee you will receive a confirmation and your name will be added to the list of participants on the forum. Please let us know if you wish to remain anonymous.

More precise information on the various activities with the opportunity to make binding reservations for these will be published next spring.

We are very much looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on this beautiful Greek island next year!

Caren and Hans

Dear friends,

since we have been contacted regarding the registration fee we would like to add as follows:

It goes without saying that this will be used in full as a donation to the cinema club to cover their expenses and towards the bench maintenance funds should there be a surplus.

We didn’t expect this to be in doubt to be honest. Sorry for the misunderstanding this caused with some fellow members.

The fantastic LC-event in Ghent (https://www.icantforget.nl/Ghent2022.html) was my first experience with other members of this forum. It was a memorable weekend, so now my wife Annebeth and I have registered for Hydra in 2023! We are looking forward to the meetup & Hydra. Thank you, Caren & Hans, for your good work!

Posting this in case anyone is interested:

My friend, the painter Desiree Opiat-Prinsloo, is offering a 3 day watercolour workshop just after our meet-up on Hydra (May 29-31). There are 2 places left.
It is a good way to get to know Hydra from a different perspective.

Avlaki will remain closed until

The Mayor of Hydra Giorgos Koukoudakis gave an answer after today's article  of FtY: "The beach of Avlakios is closed until the restoration of the dangerous spots".

Mr. Koukoudakis said in his statement:

"Avlaki" beach will remain closed until the necessary study is prepared and the related landslide prevention project is implemented.

In the last months we noticed frequent stone falls at the beach "Avlaki." For this reason, we urgently invited specialized engineers from the technical services of the Attica Region as well as from the Institute of Geological Studies (IGME). Both specialized scientists with their relevant reports found thedangerousness of the situation and advised us to prohibit access to the area in question.

For this reason, the "Avlaki" beach during this Summer (2023) and until the preparation of the relevant study and the implementation of the required landslide prevention project will remain closed. Our Municipality will make every effort to get the required project licensed, financed and implemented as soon as possible. What comes first is the safety of the lives of the residents and visitors of our Hydra. We ask for your understanding and cooperation."
