Steve Earle: Happy 50th Birthday!

That's it folks: I've been listening to Steve tonight on Radio Scotland. They did a special tribute to mark his birthday, and, more importantly, his music.
"Guitar Town" sounds as good now as it did in '86. "Copperhead Road" ,"The Devil's Right Hand" are marks of great songwriting, played with the passion the songs demand.
Happy Birthday Steve!!

He is in fine country-rockin' form in the new Live Austin City Limits CD (also DVD available). Sixteen originals and a great cover of Springsteen's State Trooper, which he introduces as "by a pretty good hillbilly singer from New Jersey".

Dear Jim Rotonda and Kush,
Thanks for the replies, and the link too!
P.S. I don't know if this is the right place to say this, but tonight I was playing Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" when my 8 year old son said ,"Dad, that sounds like cowboy music".
Prior to that, I'd been playing some Steve Earle.
Was it the American accents, the guitars, the phrasing of the songs, the delivery which led him to conclude that Dylan and Earle were essentially cowboys?
I'll ask him when he's older; maybe tomorrow.

Right now we're both listening to "From A Buick 6" (Bob's incredible Highway 61 Revisited).
Occasions such as this are a reminder that so much beauty has come from the United States of America. I need to be reminded.

It's amazing how my sons occasionally go out and buy cd's of the same albums I bought way back, on vinyl. One of them bought a few early Bob Dylan albums last year. More recently he popped his head in the door as we were watching a tv program on Brian Wilson and said "I've just got the cd of Smile" Just a couple of examples of several. Unfortunately he has no interest yet in Mr Cohen. Maybe one day....

Dear Margaret, Kush, Linda et al,
The Steve Earle album I listened to last week is an audio cassette of "Guitar Town", his first, which I bought in 1986.
The "Highway 61 Revisited" album is part of a 3 C.D. boxed set I got from my daughter for Christmas. The 3 albums are.....wait for this.....
"Bring it all back home", "Highway 61" and "Blonde on Blonde"

Was I a happy Dad? You bet!!!
Right now she is SERIOUSLY getting into L.C.'s music, especially "The Songs of Leonard Cohen", and also Joni Mitchell.
The gap in years between my daughter and Leonard is 55 . I think it's a tribute to Leonard's music: transcending the passage of time is the mark of artistry.
Margaret, the same thing can be said about Brian Wilson: I saw him perform "Smile" live in Glasgow last March, and I cried with joy! Like I said on a previous post on this thread, so much beauty has come out of the United States of America (and Canada too!

). Having said that, I'm a huge fan of the Fab Four, and reading your accent between the lines, I guess you are too.

I saw Brian Wilson on TV lately (very lately). He looked like, well, like you might expect. Genius, yes. All there? Who knows? But who cares? Except maybe Brian. Many odd things in Brian's life. Much pain and travail. I really had to wonder if he knew Carl is really dead! He seemed so, I don't know, propped up! But Good Vibrations....what a song! From the first note to the last buzz. Had Dennis lived, would it have been the same? Oh, I just heard that Johnny Carson died. It was just on the news. Do y'all know what that means? It means WE ARE GETTING OLD!
