Leonard Cohen Songs Remixed: Listen to 7 of the Best

The world lost more than a musical legend on Nov. 7 when Leonard Cohen passed away. We lost a poet, a powerful and honest voice, a heart who wasn't afraid to look fear in its face and tell the world of all it had seen.

Cohen' gravelly voice and spoken-word delivery is iconic and, though he represents a different breed of singer-songwriter and another era of understanding, his work is nevertheless timeless. We celebrate the man who will surely become myth with a look at how some producer's adapted his rawest moments for the dance floor.

Leonard Cohen Remix #7: “Chelsea Fm,” Acid Pauli

“Chelsea Hotel No. 2” is the kind of song that hits you in the heart and drags you across the feeling floor. Acid Pauli takes those painful and beautiful moments and gives you something good enough to interpretive dance to.

Leonard Cohen Remix #6: “Dance Me To The End of Love,” Mistress Barbara

The song grows in a steady crescendo until you find you've completely lost yourself to oblivion. A woman sings Cohen's desperate pleas with raw beauty, but it's all about these electronic textures.

Leonard Cohen Remix #5: “Nevermind,” PillowTalk

Cohen's rasp sounds as mean as life's low and as cool as a con man over this lazy-day rhythm. PillowTalk left the funky back-up vocalist for beautiful effect.

Leonard Cohen Remix #4: “Boogie Street," mr.freeman

“Boogie Street” is not the uplifting tune its title might suggest, but this remix puts the boogie right back into Cohen's soulful step. Simple and seductive, I'd walk down this Boogie Street any night of the week.

Leonard Cohen Remix #3: “Lover Lover Lover,” Mickey

Let's go way back in Cohen's career to 1974 when the folk singer was actually very much a singer. It's a sad tune of lost love, but it's one of his most uptempo. It's danceable in its own right, and only ever more so with a house beat.

Leonard Cohen Remix #2: “Everybody Knows,” Tiger Tooth

The dice may be loaded, and the fight may be fixed, but this beat goes on, even when the good guys are licked. Get back up again, keep playing the game, and let this driving take on a social anthem give you the inspiration to get yours.

Leonard Cohen Remix #1: "You Want It Darker," Paul Kalkbrenner

Cohen's final album was only just released. You Want it Darker is just as potent and haunting as any of his other works, and the title track is just goose-bumpy. Paul Kalkbrenner was tapped to give the solemn song a pulsing rhythm. Deep house looks good on you, Mr. Cohen.

Leonard Cohen performs at the Muziektheater in Amsterdam, Netherlands on April 18, 1988.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Dec. 3-dated chart will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

The late Leonard Cohen is remembered on the chart, as his most recent studio album, You Want It Darker, flies from No. 48 to No. 7 with 30,000 units (up 197 percent) and 28,000 in traditional album sales (up 188 percent). Cohen died on Nov. 7, but his death was not announced until Nov. 10.

You Want It Darker debuted at No. 10 on the Nov. 12-dated list. It marked his second top 10 effort, following 2012’s Old Ideas, which reached No. 3. Just outside the top 10, Cohen’s greatest hits album The Essential Leonard Cohen, debuts at No. 13 with 20,000 units (up 686 percent) and with 11,000 albums sold (up 588 percent).

Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' Hits Hot 100 for First Time

Cohen's original 1984 version of the classic debuts at last at No. 59 following his passing.

As previously reported, Rae Sremmurd tops the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Dec. 3) for a second week with "Black Beatles," featuring Gucci Mane. Meanwhile, a legendary recording graces the Hot 100 for the first time, as Leonard Cohen's original version of "Hallelujah" debuts at No. 59.

The song starts thanks to a fairly even split of streaming and sales chart points, as it enters the Digital Song Sales chart at No. 12 with 33,000 downloads sold in the week ending Nov. 17 (up 1,177 percent), according to Nielsen Music. It also drew 3.8 million U.S. streams in that period, a 279 percent increase.

Cohen died Nov. 7 and his death was announced late Thursday, Nov. 10. Thus, gains for "Hallelujah" on the latest charts reflect a full week of consumption (Nov. 11-17) following the news of his passing.

Cohen originally released "Hallelujah" on his 1984 album Various Positions, but -- incredibly, given the song's enduring appeal -- his version, until this week, had spent a mere one week on a Billboard survey (it charted at No. 7 on the mostly physical sales-based Hot Singles Sales chart dated Dec. 8, 2012).

Jeff Buckley's 1994 cover of "Hallelujah" has since become beloved, although it, too, wasn't a chart hit at the time and has yet to hit the Hot 100; it debuts on the Hot 100's Bubbling Under chart (dated Dec. 3) at No. 7, as it re-enters Digital Song Sales at No. 29 (18,000 sold, up 698 percent) and its streams soar by 205 percent to 1.7 million.

Any version of "Hallelujah" first hit the Hot 100 in 2010, when Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris' take, featuring Charlie Sexton, reached No. 13 that February. They had performed the song on MTV's Hope for Haiti Now telethon following the country's devastating earthquake. American Idol's Lee DeWyze and The Voice's Matthew Schuler took "Hallelujah" to Nos. 44 and 40 on the Hot 100 in 2010 and 2013, respectively. In December 2015, Jordan Smith of The Voice sent his version to No. 61, while Lindsey Stirling's mostly instrumental cover reached No. 81 this past January.

On the Nov. 12 Hot 100 (three weeks ago), Pentatonix's a cappella cover brought "Hallelujah" to the Hot 100's top 40 for a third time (following the Timberlake/Morris/Sexton and Schuler versions). On the latest Hot 100, it ranks slightly higher than Cohen's version, bounding 81-56. The act's cover climbs 27-19 on Digital Song Sales (27,000, up 29 percent) and surges by 59 percent to 4.6 million U.S. streams.

The Hot 100 and all charts will update tomorrow (Nov. 22) on Billboard.com.

Leonard Cohen Songs, 'Hallelujah' Covers Storm Charts

11/22/2016 by Kevin Rutherford

Jeff Buckley

In addition to Cohen's original, "Hallelujah" covers by Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Pentatonix & more grace multiple charts.

A host of songs and albums by Leonard Cohen soar on Billboard charts (dated Dec. 3) after the Nov. 7 death of the acclaimed singer-songwriter. Perhaps most notably, his signature song "Hallelujah" enters the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, starting at No. 59. Meanwhile, cover versions of the classic dot the Hot 100, Hot Rock Songs and other charts.

Cohen's "Hallelujah," originally released on his 1984 album Various Positions, surges to 33,000 downloads sold (up 1,177 percent) and 3.8 million U.S. streams (up 279 percent) in the tracking week ending Nov. 17, according to Nielsen Music. Those numbers also spark the song's 20-5 vault on Hot Rock Songs, marking Cohen's best rank on the chart (which began in 2009). The track roars to No. 2 on Rock Digital Song Sales and debuts on Rock Streaming Songs at No. 6.

Among "Hallelujah" covers, Pentatonix's version, released Oct. 21 on the a cappella group's album A Pentatonix Christmas, is even outperforming Cohen's on the Hot 100. After debuting on the Hot 100 dated Nov. 12 at No. 32 (its peak so far), the cover slots in just above Cohen's original, rising 81-56 thanks to 27,000 downloads sold (up 29 percent) and 4.6 million streams (up 59 percent). The song also debuts at No. 29 on the Adult Contemporary airplay chart and leads Holiday Digital Song Sales for a fourth week.

While Cohen's original climbs, a pair of "Hallelujah" covers enter Hot Rock Songs, as Jeff Buckley's and Rufus Wainwright's versions debut at Nos. 10 and 16, respectively. Buckley's 1994 recording (itself inspired by a piano-led version by John Cale three years prior) and now considered by many to be the definitive take on the song, starts with 18,000 downloads sold (up 698 percent) and 1.7 million streams (up 205 percent). Wainwright's piano-based 1997 version, subsequently featured on the 2001 Shrek soundtrack (although Cale's plays during the movie), enters with 8,000 sold (up 588 percent) and 858,000 streams (up 148 percent).

Yet another "Hallelujah" cover on the charts: Lindsey Stirling's 2015 mostly-instrumental interpretation, which re-enters Hot Christian Songs at No. 44 after leading the chart for a week nearly a year ago (on Jan. 9); it's up by 159 percent to 1,000 sold.

Meanwhile, two other Cohen tracks debut on Hot Rock Songs. "You Want It Darker," the title cut from his final album (released Oct. 21), debuts at No. 22 (4,000 sold; 893,000 streams) and "Suzanne," another of Cohen's signature songs, from 1967, enters at No. 25 (4,000 sold; 747,000 streams).

Leonard Cohen performs at the Muziektheater in Amsterdam, Netherlands on April 18, 1988.

Since the death of Leonard Cohen on Nov. 7, countless memorials and tributes have honored his life and legacy. Last month, a benefit concert took place in San Francisco with artists such as Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek, Christopher Owens, The Fresh and Onlys' Tim Cohen, Sonny and the Sunset’s Sonny Smith, and others.

On Monday (Dec. 19), it was announced that a second benefit concert is scheduled to take place at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York, on Jan. 24. The event, titled "Sincerely, L. Cohen: A Celebration of Leonard Cohen," will see performances of Cohen classics from Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Will Sheff (Okkervil River), Josh Ritter, Amy Helm, Ian O'Neil (Deer Tick) and many more.

The concert will do more than pay tribute to Cohen, though, as all proceeds will be donated to Preemptive Love Coalition, which offers support and aid for refugees in war-torn communities. Tickets and more information regarding the concert can be found here.

Adam Cohen Talks Bringing Together Elvis Costello, Lana Del Rey & More for First Official Leonard Cohen Memorial Concert

Leonard Cohen performs at the Muziektheater in Amsterdam, Netherlands on April 18, 1988.

9/18/2017 by Zane Warman

The family of Leonard Cohen has announced a memorial concert to commemorate the first anniversary of the esteemed singer/songwriter’s death.

“Tower of Song: A Memorial Tribute to Leonard Cohen” will take place on Nov. 6 at Bell Centre in his hometown of Montreal, and will feature performances from Elvis Costello, Lana Del Rey, Philip Glass, Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites of The Lumineers, k.d. lang, Feist, Sting, Patrick Watson, Damien Rice and more. The evening will also include spoken word readings of Cohen’s poetry from notable actors.

“There were so many groups of people expressing beautiful interest in commemorating and memorializing and paying tribute to my old man,” Cohen’s son and You Wanted It Darker producer, Adam Cohen, told Billboard. “Instead of having it be a whole bunch of candles burning in various places, we wanted to pull a bunch of disparate pieces together and make a big bonfire, a big sight on a hill.”

Proceeds of the memorial concert will go to the Canada Council, which awards grants to Canadian arts projects and supported the older Cohen during his earlier career as a fiction writer, as well as The Council of Arts and Letters of Quebec and the Montreal Arts Council. Hal Willner and Adam Cohen are producing the event, with Emmy-nominated director Jack Bender set to film it for an upcoming TV special.

Read our full discussion with Adam Cohen about memorializing his father below.

This memorial was set in motion by a set of instructions you received from your father: "Put me in a pine box next to my mother and father. Have a small memorial for close friends and family in Los Angeles, and if you want a public event, do it in Montreal." Could you talk about that a little bit more?

I think it's normal for a son to feel a sense of devotion and responsibility to his old man, especially when, in this instance, it's about a beloved public figure. I also think that throughout my old man's career, he was so focused on the work, and never the actual career -- the art, rather than the commerce -- that he was easily hoodwinked and actually had lost his fortune on many occasions and was often unaware of how appreciated he was -- unconcerned, even. It gives me great pleasure to be organizing where the reach of this man's influence can be put on display, to honor him in that way.

How did you decide this was the right way and right time to honor your father's memory?

I'm embarrassed to confess that only weeks after his passing, I was already thinking of a way in which to celebrate him. Not just because it was part of a parting instruction, but because it's important to me to have a public memorial and tribute. We have categorically declined, as a family -- even while my father was with us -- to endorse, officialize or sanction tributes around the world. They were always, at best, allowed to go on, but never with our blessing. There was something beautiful about this being the first and official tribute organized and sanctioned by the family.

In the spirit of finding a date that corresponded with something meaningful, I think it's beautiful to do it in his hometown. He traveled a lot, but he always identified and heralded his little hometown of Montreal. To do it around the anniversary of his passing corresponds with the Jewish tradition of the end of a year of mourning, a year of fondness and recollection. I'm hoping, on a personal level, that this is going to tie the bow.

The other thing is, there were so many groups of people expressing beautiful interest in commemorating and memorializing and paying tribute to my old man. Instead of having it be a whole bunch of candles burning in various places, we wanted to pull a bunch of disparate pieces together and make a big bonfire, a big sight on a hill.

Damien Rice, Philip Glass and Lana Del Rey do appear to be decently disparate artists. What do you see as the thread that unites them with Leonard?

Good taste? (Laughs.) I happen to know Damien, so I know the fondness and the influence he has for my father. I know that Philip Glass worked with my old man on something, and he's always expressed admiration for my father. Lana has famously covered "Chelsea Hotel #2." All of these things, from my humble perspective, are just a mark of good taste.

You’re raising money for the Canada Council, which has a storied relationship with your father in his early days. What does this organization represent to Canadians and to you?

When you are zoning out and looking at your social network feeds, and there's an alarmist on the left, telling you that a government is cutting back funds for the arts, it's easy to ignore. It's easy to have it be just another talking point in the cartridge of the left, but the truth of the matter is a country that invests in its own artists is investing in the richness of its people and of its creative resources. Canada is one of those last countries doing that. The grant system that they have has been in place to encourage and support artists of all types. My father was one of them, and he always wore it as a badge of pride for Canada. He always had gratitude for the Canadian grant system that gave him his start.
