no more a-roving

Post by kleinschmidt »

Yet we'll go no more a-roving. By the light of the moon!
Does it mean that he's given up on the hole idea of love? Leonard used to love the moon, Leonards moon used to swim naked. Now he won't follow it's orders anymore

The song is dedicated to Irving Layton, Leonard's life-time
friend and teacher. Layton is nowadays in very poor health.
I think we have to see the song and dedication from this
perspective.

Or from perspective of that anegdote from late 1990s about their famous libidos :D
Leonard visited Layton in hospital, and asked him "Irving, did you felt that your libido goes poorer with years" - He answered he did, and then LC asked him when. layton said "Well, when I was 21" :!:
So, we'll go no more a-roving?

Actually, I've tried to translate this poem, but found a difficulty with the very "a-roving". I can guess the meaning, though there is no exact match in dictionary. Can anyone help with description?

Hi Anthemer - a-roving just means wandering or rambling. It can also mean have a number of partners on the go. I would have thought Leonard's comment in that interview meant he was not going to flit between a lot of different women friends.
