pete...you must have a very clever family member who has been able to trace the very derbyshire country road lay by of your ancestral beginings...it makes my family history that includes an american general, a long line of manchester jewish cantors, new york policemen, a family of international renown glass engravers, various cumbrian landowners etc. etc. etc seem quite exotic....plus you disappoint me as i never had you down as from peasant stock....ta ken

btw ...It's not a lay by...High Needham consists of one farm and about 3 houses. I'm led to believe that the name Needham derives from 'needy hamlet'.

I always thought you were descended from the Melton Mowbray Needhams' who cries could be heard through the quiet lanes. I think that is where your first name orginated too.

Unfortunately it wasn't a sucessful business and Melton Mowbray went on to become the epicentre for cheese.

Okthen, the last subject was regarding names.

My maiden name is Kinsella ( which I am considering returning to soon).
I come from a long line of royalty as the King of Leinster ( i think it was him) had two sons, called Cheavanaigh and Choinseallaigh. (Kavanagh and Kinsella ) So feel free to call me Your Highness or Princess anytime.

My husband... ex i must stress....on the other hand, came from a long line of cowards.

His family name was Lynam, a very Irish name, but when the black and tans came here on the authority of the English government, some Lynams added a H to the name... hence Lynham... to make it sound more english. There are very few Lynhams in Ireland.

so there ya go!!

Still on the signs theme, I took this in my neighbourhood this morning (the blobs are rain drops on the lens). A woman stopped her car to ask me if there was something in the bushes. She was obviously trying to figure out why I was kneeling on the ground in the rain, apparently taking a picture of a road sign. I decided not to try to explain. I just told her it was complicated.
