Leonard in photo album about Lagoudera-Hydra

Post by Dem »

A new book-photo album of 573(!) pages about
Hydra's famous club "Lagoudera" was recently
published in Greece:

"Lagoudera-The Golden Age of Hydra 1959-1967"

Image

Lagoudera was the most famous club on Hydra (and not only on Hydra)
back then with visitors that ranged from Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Ustinov
to Jackie Kennedy, Aristotelis Onasis and Maria Callas.

Image

The photos in the book come from the personal archive
of Lagoudera's owner Babis Morres and of course Leonard Cohen
is included as he was one of the regulars:

In one of the pictures above you can also see Katsika's grocery-cafe shop
where Leonard met for the first time Marianne:

Those of you who have visited Hydra will realise that Katsika's shop
was next door to where the Roloi Bar is today.

Thanks Dem - it's so nice to step into that era of Hydra, which Leonard was so much a part of! 8)

Cheers,
Andrew :D

A small correction, Dem: the Roloi is the exact location of Katsika's. The right hand side was dominated by a huge chilled display cabinet, so we shoppers used only the left-hand door. Entrance to the coffee-tables was mostly from the side-door onto the other street.

Next to Tasso's, up the street, was a restaurant also owned by the Katsika family and run by the indomitable Stavros. His tables were outside Katsika's grocery store (now the Roloi) so he had to walk a considerable distance from the kitchen to his customers, avoiding donkeys etc. It was traditional for friends of Chuck and Gordon to congregate here at noon to start the day's drinking, and many empty bottles of beer do I remember gathering on those gingham table-cloths.

I mention all this because you will recall that Leonard stood in the doorway of Katsika's grocery store when he first invited Marianne to join him for a drink. That drink would have been immediately outside the door, at one of Stavros' tables.

Yasou Hydtriot (and Dem),
When I lived on Hydra in 1973, the back room of Katsika's was closed and just the grocery store was open - but Chuck & Gordon still held court in front and many times I joined them. I also shopped at Katsika's on occasion but more often used the center port grocery store referred to as "Fancy Man's" (it's still there), BTW Hydiot, is Tasso a member of the Katsika family? I ask because of a certain familial resemblance. Kali mera!

Good to hear from you Jazz.

Yes, Tasso is a Katsika. That corner of the island was the Katsika empire!

(smile) thanks Hydriot - that's what I thought - He certainly is the nicest one in the family - if you ask me - such a sweet man.
Hope you are having a good summer in London.

Thanks Hydriot for the correction.
Only now I realise that Roloi was Katsika's crocery store!

Anyway, here's another photo of Leonard from that era in Hydra:

Image

It was publised in the 20th August issue of the magazine "Tachydromos"
in another article about the famous bar "Lagoudera":

He is.
As you can see in the other photos above
he used to have a beard at that time on Hydra.
