Took a break after that long-winded 148-line poem "The Prisoner." Came back with this simple villanelle.
Not Through Song
Not through song or through poetry—
With these words that I’ve often said—
Can I know what you mean to me.
Though they’re spoken eloquently
They cannot be heard or be read,
Not through song or through poetry.
But if we choose to hear or see
Then only on this path ahead
Can I know what you mean to me.
When you are here in memory
It is through my heart I am led,
Not through song or through poetry.
That surface I have traveled free,
And with this love that I embed
Can I know what you mean to me.
I’d sing this with a melody,
But I’ll just feel it here instead.
Not through song or through poetry
Can I know what you mean to me.
