This is so tragic, Antoine. I remember seeing some footage of her or hearing some recording of her singing or seeing a/some photos of her... way back, and here, I believe. Maybe a combination? Are you able to link us to any of that? Or, maybe Jarkko could? I remember being very positively impressed by her. Unbelievable that she would take her own life. It's just wrenching.

We are shocked at this sad news.
She was one of the highlights at our Hydra Event in 2002, and later she made
several albums with Leonard's songs (http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/yasmineCD.html)

Since Mr. Cohen is currently on tour and is performing next week Saturday in Belgium,
I was hoping to contact the gentleman himself and let him new of the news.
I don't know if he knows her or if he would be willing to do this, but
in my eyes there would be no greater "tribute" than a song dedicated to her.

If anyone knows how to contact somebody close to mr Cohen I would greatly appreciate it.
I will also post this in the news section just to increase the odds.

yasmine's website: http://www.yasmine.be
news site from the tv station she was working : http://deredactie.be/cm/vrtnieuws
It's all over the front page, beneath the other sad news of the King of Pop.

any help is greatly appreciated...

Yasmine, Belgian Cohen-cover singer, died yesterday

Post by vandendriessche »

Yesterday we heard the very sad news that Yasmine (aged 37) a famous Belgian singer-songwriter, who was famous for translating and covering a lot of Leonard Cohen songs some years back, has taken her own life. Apparently she could not cope with a recently ended marriage with Marianne, another Belgian public figure.
As tribute to her the Belgian TV yesterday night broadcast the recent live concert exclusively with Cohen songs.

It is very sad news indeed, good to hear that she is known to Cohen fans outside of Belgium as well... Did not know she had performed on Hydra. Her loss is felt so strongly here in Belgium that a tribute song to her by Mr Cohen himself would indeed be immensely appreciated...

I feel so sorry about this. We had a very good time with Yasmine on Hydra in 2002.

The more I read up about it, the harder it gets to believe.

I wasn't a fan, I mean, I didn't buy an album or saw her perform live.
But she was just, you know, "everybody's property", doing the things she did on tv.
That and a couple of catchy tunes that nearly everybody loved.

I admire her the most for her openmindedness about her sexuality.
She really did seem to be such a strong person, with a profound need to be happy.

I guess it just became all too much for her when her girlfriend left.
I should probably unhook from tv and radio as my mind can't give it a rest.

It's just so tragic... and such a waste.

I believe a very warm THANK YOU is in place for making this tribute happen.
The ovation from the crowd (twice) really said it all.

Thank you very much for willing to do this.
In my mind, there couldn't have been a greater tribute to her than this.

Can anyone suggest somewhere for me to order a copy of Yasmine's CD (Vandaag) of Leonard's songs online? I heard it playing at the Antwerp show and I was touched both by this and by Leonard's dedication of the show to her.

Thanks

Wendy

EDIT: Ordered from http://www.proxis.be. See link from nessler below. Thanks nessler!
