Organization of 10 New Songs
Organization of 10 New Songs
I just stumbled across this album
I read once that the organization of the songs on this album is astonishing.
Listen to the album as a whole, rather than individual songs.
Has anyone else found the order of the songs to have meaning?

The record for me contain 5 songs out of 10 that truly stand out.
1. Alexandra Leaving
2. In My Secret Life
3. Love Itself
4. Land Of Plenty
5. You Have Loved Enough
For me the other songs feel like fillers. I think "The Land Of Plenty" is a brilliant song and has a very "Chimes Of Freedom" type concept to it. I think it should be heard in a more commercial market rather then just Mr. Cohen's new record. Maybe thats just the way I feel about it.

In Jim Devlin's book "In his own words" you can read Leonard's comment, that each singer has only 3 songs maximum. I would like to know more about the third one, because I am so familiar with the other two, one set in minor, one set in major.
Yesterday I listened to "Jazz Police" and I really liked it. But "The land of plenty" will always remain a pain in my ears.

I think I have commented before that this album is one of his best. It returns to his early style whilst creating a mood which is 30 years on from his first recordings.
I was never much enthused about 'The Future', except for one or two particular songs, and felt short changed that this may have been his summit in terms of musical composition and delivery... it gathers dust whilst TNS , if it was vinyl, would already be well worn in the grooves.
This is how it is and my ears are not troubled by any aspects of it.
My only criticism regarding the order is that the weakest song is at the end. 'Land of Plenty' was the filler to substantiate the title.
Good job we are all different or life would be boring.

I'm sorry CoCO, forgive me. I could not resist, please do not fall out with me. I think if you turn over this leaf, you will see that it has been burnt and roasted in hell(heretic's sentiments).
Seriously is Heretic not portraying the devil on this board? There is part of me feels sorry for Heretic, but thats human weakness. Perhaps someone will adopt him for christmas? Could we give him away in one of leonards prize draws, that Jarkko organises? Perhaps to the 1,000,000 visitor? A special vulcanised prize?

I am a right bad ass, dankish prince and I love my Violet to bits.
I in no way support any of the unpleasant personal remarks Heretic makes, and I'll probably get shot down in flames for saying this (there's a pun there, if I could just put my finger on it), but I think this board needs Heretic, or someone like him, to play devil's advocate from time to time.
