Me and my girlfriend were on the second row in the middle yesterday and the concert was brilliant. His voice was much better than I had expected, his band played very well and he played all the songs I´ve been wanting to hear live for years. The only thing I didn´t like, were the sometimes long instrumental solos in between, that tended to get close to cheesy elevator music once in a while... Unfortunatly we had to leave after Hallelujah to catch the last train back home  We couldn´t have stood much longer anyways though, we´d been standing (queuing up and waiting) for over 6 hours and our legs were killing us.
Here are some pictures I took:

We are getting old when our legs start to give way. We could have done without Martha wailing away, pretty ghastly, then silent cloud you could have seen all of Cohen. Love the photos.

I also was lucky enough to stand for 2 hours queuing in the rain and then a further 5 hours, in the dry :) listening to the concert and its prelude. This was by far the cheapest ticketed venue that I have seen, and I am sure that the price helped to fill the place.

This was the first time I have been to Minnewater Park and while the venue was OK, the fact that there was only one narrow bridge out of the arena did lead to a lot of confusion, delay and in one case tears as we tried to get out, if there had been some sort of accident inside, I dread to think what the outcome might have been.

However!!

The concert was very good indeed, as we have come to expect from this tour. There were some changes to the setlist from Dublin, gone was the emotive reading of 'A thousand kisses deep' and also 'That don't make it junk', in their places were 'So long Marianne' and 'Sisters of mercy'.

Cohen interacted more with the audience than at Dublin, he appeared to genuinely enjoy himself and reacted to comments in a good humoured fashion. The age range of the audience was much more even here than in Dublin, with a large number of young fans along with us oldies, good to see this as many obviously knew the songs and were not just there for the event.

There were sterling virtuoso performances from all of the accompanying artists, and despite what others have posted about instrumentals being too long and almost cheesy, CHEESY !!! what on earth is cheesy about a highly skilled musician playing his heart out to accompany an iconic artist ???. Sharon Robinson's voice, and that of the Webb sisters compliments Cohen's perfectly, the show would have been much the poorer without them. 'If it be your will' was again a haunting rendition by the Webb sisters that had many people, myself included, in tears.

I have to agree with the other poster about Martha Wainwright however, although I must confess to not being a big fan of hers anyway.

The quality of the sound was not quite as good as Dublin and there were a few minor miss-timings in the lighting but these were very minor things and only someone who had been to another concert would have realised that there was anything amiss.

Cohen's voice seems to be getting even better, if that is possible, I just hope he can hold out for the end of year concerts, I am looking forward to seeing him again in Paris in November. At least there I will be able to rest my weary legs

Thanks you once again Leonard Cohen and supporters for another wonderful evening.

I have seen at least three signs " Nooduitgang " which is the Dutch equivalent for "Emergency exit".

I last saw LC in about 1975 in Liverpool, and thought this was one of the best gigs I'd ever seen. I saw him again in Bruges yesterday and had the same reaction.
In additional to fantastic songs and an ever improving voice, he has a stunning presence, great arrangements and a very tight band.
Just great.

Never heard a bird singing more beautiful, than the one in the tree above the central shelter roof, during "bird on the wire".
Never heard so many people being so silent as during "if it be your will" ; no needles falling could be heard, only the soft dropping of tears on the wooden floor of the mini stage we were sitting on.
One of the happiest evenings of my life, thanks to a man and his crowd, who seemed to be happy too ;
After his concert in Antwerp, in the seventies, it took a long time to see him again ; now i will not have to wait that long : Paris, november 26, Olympia 1224 & 1226 : after that i think i can say : if it be your will ...
Thanks, for the trouble you took from our eyes.

I don't get the word cheesy.... As stated above: what the hell is wrong with a musician playing is heart out?

Mr. Cohen was simply brilliant last night. Although I missed Chelsea Hotel, A thousand kisses deep, Famous blue raincoat ... But as always you just have to live the moment. With an excessive amount of songs like Mr. Cohen has, you always feel a bit sorry for a certain song to be dropped out of the setlist.

The band was just fantastic although I missed a violin, especially with Dance me to the end of love.
I thought I heard the best cover of If it be your will preformed by Antony on the soundtrack of I'm your man, but last night The Webb sisters moved me in a way I never considered possible.

A lot of people asked me and my friends if we weren't a bit too young to enjoy Leonard Cohen's music. The answer is simple: you're never too young. I'm sure his music will move people of many generations to come.

Sorry, it was my lack of understanding of Flemish at fault there, I also saw those signs but took them to mean 'no exit' a simple mistake when 'uitgang' is exit and if you put what appears to be a negative 'nood' in front then an easy mistake to make, I am surprised that it was not in French or used the international symbol as well for something as important as that, anyway like I say my mistake. However I still stand by what I said about the main exit ( where it was signposted 'exit' ) after the concert, it was dangerous, perhaps at the Cactus Festival they don't normally get so many people trying to leave at the same time due to the diversity of artists.

Martijn has got it so right about Anthony and the Webb sisters, my feelings exactly.

The sun did not exactly shine on the righteous, but at least it did not rain :)

Zen-avond met Leonard Cohen

Image

BRUGGE - 'I have tried in my own way to be free', zong Leonard Cohen gisteren in een stemmig Minnewaterpark.

'Dance me to the end of love' was een perfecte intro.

Songs als 'Who by fire' en 'Hey that's no way' werden meditaties die 'deze prachtige stad' (zei Cohen) eer aandeden.

'Remember me', zong Cohen. Absoluut, oude vriend.

Al werd de hilarische passage in 'Tower of Song' ('I was born like this / I had no choice/ I was born with the gift of a golden voice') uiteraard op luid applaus onthaald.

(Bart Steenhaut)

Leonard Cohen - 10/07/08 - Minnewaterpark, Brugge

I didn't come to Bruges to fool you in Hallelujah.)

Tijdens If it be your will stegen de Webb Sisters boven zichzelf uit en Closing Time bleek niet het ware einde. Hij kwam ironisch terug met I tried to leave you en Wither thou goest. "And here's a man still working for your smile", klonk het in de staart en iedereen wist dat het concert een veel diepere ervaring geweest was.

Cutting Edge

Leonard Cohen, Martha Wainwright, Minnewaterpark Brugge

Ze kwam haar nieuwe album met de prachtige titel ‘I know you are married but I've got feelings too' voorstellen.

I was born like this, I had no choice. I was born with the gift of a golden voice.'

Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.'

I've told the truth. I didn't come to Bruges just to fool you.' Alle aanwezigen konden dat alleen maar beamen.

My wife and I just arrived back home in England via P&O Ferry to Zeebrugge/Bruges after a three day jaunt, culminating in our bearing witness to the master of Minnewater and all-he surveyed. And did we love him, and was that love returned in spades? You bet. Highlights? So many: the voice, the songs, the hat, the suit, the band, the singers, and the man's genuine enjoyment and regard for us, & his legions of fans for paying attention for best part of 3 hours that we did not want to stop. At the end he thanked us all for keeping his songs alive down the decades. Well, it''s been a privilege, Mr Cohen, a privilege.
