Hmm...Master Song - I don't quite see the reggae rhythm but that makes it even more interesting for me. Georges...rap is cool too but personally I favor reggae. Did LC ever interact/meet Bob Marley ?

p.s. actually I was thinking of the Stranger Song tune when I read your post....Master Song certainly can be reggae material. :D

Dear all,
My G*d, this thread has got my brain cells racing.
Yes, I can picture "The Master Song" with a reggae beat, and I take Kush's point about unhooking the favourite (original?) reference point before you can accept the necessary leap in a musical (and cultural?) sense.
One of my 60's musical memories was Julie Driscol and the Brian Augur Trinity's "This Wheel's On Fire". A great song, which in the last few years has received much T.V. play, being the theme tune for a successful Brit sit-com called "Absolutely Fabulous". It was written, of course, by Bob Dylan. To this day I've never heard Dylan sing it.
Much later,in the late 70's, Patti Smith had a huge hit in Britain with a song called "Because The Night". This one was written by Bruce Springsteen, and, to date I've never heard him sing it.
The two examples I quote both involved contractual disputes with record companies / producers, I think! The point is, were I to hear either of these songs as sung by the original artists, I'd have to shift my reference point in the other direction!
Andrew.

Along the same lines Andrew....I love Buffy Sainte-Marie's God is Alive, Magic is Afoot. Were LC to record it I doubt if I could come to like his version better, since the "original" :) is so deeply entrenched in me.

I think "Hey thats no way to say goodbye" would lent it self well to a reggae beat.

kush, God is alive and magick is afoot is a spiritual experience!!!!!!
to hear Leonard record it would be just Nirvana or Cobainlike.
I wish he would do this song on his new album.

Paula.....YES !! Well, we have more than enough songs now....all we need is a band.

Georges....irrespective of how it may compare to BSM's version I wish he would do the song too. And 'Priests' too. I havent heard LC at all for quite a while now and am waiting for a album of new songs to start hearing him again.

Andrew...talking of Bruce Springsteen....his album 'Ghost of Tom Joad' is one of my alltime favorites. Perhaps musically a little one-dimensional it is one of the most tightly focussed single-minded whole album I have heard. Actually the lack of musical variety adds to the focus. It is a social commentary on America (with a Steinbeck/Guthrie connection) that atleast all americans should hear I think so to understand a little more the various and diverse social, cultural and ethnic dynamics at work here. It is not so much 'protest' as 'social commentary'. There is a fantastic song about a Texas Klan member wanting to take revenge on a vietnamese immigrant by knifing him but at the moment of truth decides not to. In one single song Springsteen gets deep into the skin and psyche of two Texans without passing judgment on either. One of many great story-songs on the album.

p.s. Georges...any pun was completely unintended :D

i despise willie nelson's "bird on a wire" and patty lovless' "coming back to you". however nick cave' "avalanche" is brilliant and tori amos' "famous blue raincoat" is the only other version i like. i agree "hey that's no way to say goodbye" could be good reggae
