i really love the late 60s era when folk, country & rock merged and produced albums like nashville skyline, sweetheart of the rodeo, music from big pink, etc. i suppose those albums are labelled 'americana' these days. john stewart's california bloodlines certainly fits into that category. it was recorded at the same time as nashville skyline, in an adjacent studio, so several of the musicians appear on both albums.

Hi Dharma,

Good album. If it was recorded in Nashville about that time, I would guess that Leonard was also there then. I know that John Stewart used to list Leonard among his favorite songwriters. Was Bob Johnston involved with California Bloodlines?

Just watched The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford at the weekend.. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis wrote the soundtrack... Nick even makes a little appearance as a wanderin' minstel in it!
I would recommend the album to anyone... also the soundtrack to The Proposition... another film the he wrote the screenplay and the music to. Wonderful stuff indeed.

tindersticks' side-project last year, songs for the young at heart, which featured the likes of bonnie 'prince' billy, kurt wagner and jarvis cocker, is one of my 5-year-old son's favourite albums! well, you gotta start 'em young

scarlett johansson ~ anywhere i lay my head

Image

hmmm, i've only had one listen so far...

this is a tom waits covers album (with one self-penned track), but it sounds NOTHING like tom waits. if anything, the sound has a ghostly hint of phil spector. this is one of those albums where you throw your preconceptions out the window. i'm sure it will divide opinion.

i think someone like marianne faithfull would do a far better covers album of waits' songs - loved her version of strange weather. :D
