unique talents of one of Canada's better known poets, Leonard Cohen.
Dr. Kim Solez is organizing a series of events for the poet's

Congrats for planning a birthday celebration in Canada and calling it Leonard Cohen Nights. BUT.... the Australians have been doing it for ten years! And it's not the first time for the fans in England either. So, I don't think its a good idea for you to take all the credit for the idea of "Leonard Cohen Nights".
Reading the articles, one would think you instigated and planned the events in Australia and England.
Celebrating his birthday is not all that "unique" Just ask the English and the Australians.

What is different about our idea is the idea of replicating this many times over and eventually having thousands of events all over the world just like Robert Burns Nights. I am working cooperatively with Andrew Darbyshire and Lizzie Madder and am helping them with their events in substantive ways.
You have also fallen into a bit of a trap here in an amusing way. On Hydra I commented that I was looking to hear from someone who was really upset with the idea I was putting forward. Despite my plea for such a person to reveal themselves no one has until now! So you would appear to be finally answering my request for a "person who is really upset with this idea" in my presentation at:

Yes well I think it is already spreading, 5 events is a lot! But in that way you are singular as well in that no one else has stated that they think the idea will not catch on and that the number of events will not grow. Anyway in a year's time it will be clear whether the idea is a success. I predict you will be very surprised at how well it goes! So revisit your words above in mid 2003!
Leonard has some amazing powers but they do not include being physically present at many places at once. So your idea that we are just holding these events to meet him also needs rethinking!

In the CBC Arts News the reporter states, "Solez has plans to export his celebration too. He has already planned a simultaneous Leonard Cohen Night in Leicester, England this fall"... A friend of Solez's in Toowoomba, Australia is planning a second spin-off party
So, ten years of celebrating Leonard Cohen's birthday becomes a "spin-off"? Poor England and Australia, after all these years, to be only an appendage of the great event in Canada.
As to whether LC NIGHTS will be a success? In the short run, YES. But in the long run, No. It will not last. Or rather, I should say, it will last only so long as LC does.
May he live 10,000 years.

I see! Well first of all you know I do not control what reporters write and the text you quoted is certainly not the only inaccurate text. I did not say "whoa" in my interview and I imagine Leonard has never said "whoa" in his life because he is not that sort of guy. So the end of the Edmonton Journal story is inaccurate. And an anonymous visitor with the name Whoa! should have been deeply offended by that last paragraph, or had the reporter already put you to sleep by then!
I imagine the focus of the story is so much on me in part because it is an Edmonton paper and I live here!
Futurists predict a rapid rise of life expectancy to 140 which is when the human body really wears out. So that gives Leonard 72+ more years to live and me 84. So I agree with you that the effort may lose some steam around 2074 to 2086 but imagine how many Leonard Cohen Night events a year there might be by then!
Anyway thanks for predicting "short term" success for the initiative. We do agree on that!

I've enjoyed your discussion, Whoa, and Dr. Solez.
I can appreciate your point, Dr. Solez, that you can and will be taken out of context by a journalist.
I think Whoa had a point, though, that it seems like you feel that your event is "unique." And your confidence that you will "ultimately" meet him is a little on the arrogant side. Two years ago, I was quoted in the Edmonton Journal that it was "my dream to meet him." Whoa is right; I'd like to meet him too. But, I am not doing my event with the Victoria Writers' Society in order to meet LC. I am doing it because I want to say thank you to my mentor. I am a POET and a SONGWRITER who has been influenced by LC's work, and feel very proud that he, too, is a Canadian.
I hope your event will be an annual affair, but do you really think people will want to continue going to Edmonton? I was an Edmontonian for 28 years, and what is there besides West Edmonton Mall? September can get pretty cold, too -- I hope you don't get snow. Have you ever heard Margaret Atwood's comments about Edmonton? They're not very favourable. She taught at the U of A and she HATED the city.
But, perhaps location doesn't matter.

Hmm! I think you miss the point. The idea I lay claim to is the idea of having multiple events all over the world, eventually thousands, as occurs for Robert Burns. That is the idea. So Vancouver and Edmonton are not competing. By having an event you are very much helping the effort and me. And I appreciate it!
The backgound is all explained in http://www.leonardcohennights.org . The Edmonton event is a prototype in the sense that we are going to carefully record what goes on there and provide the plan, the signage, the marketing and funding strategy, everything that might be helpful to people who wish to mount similar events in the future in other cities around the world but perhaps lack the confidence to do it completely on their own.
I love Edmonton and would never move to another city, and have traveled all over the world so have a good basis for comparisons. But the power of Leonard Cohen's work is so strong that even someone with a strong prejudice against Edmonton can have a wonderful time at our event!

Not sure how much experience you have with the media but the article is as factual as most!
