Tchaikovsky was on before

Post by Boss »

Tchaikovsky was on before
Buddy lay still
He prefers classical music
to the popular stuff
I am still unsure.
Yesterday morning
we went to the beach
I studied the horizon
And, as I did when I was a boy,
wondered if I could see
the round edges
like those old scientists
I had read about.

It was cloudy
but he didn't mind
Sniffing here
and over there.
He knew not of Cohen
of Putin, of Kabul
He eyed the gulls
Didn't get too close to
the lapping water -
isn't rapt in cold water
and I've always wondered 'why?'

The news comes on -
she talks of prisoners
petrol prices
federal funding
Turkey and the PKK
and China's human rights
She is gone
Buddy licks his leg
and quietly sighs
as if he misses her already

I turn on Albinoni
Adagio, but I'm not too
sure what that means
I think of Lizzy
how we shared
precious moments
on this forum
And she knows
no one is perfect
not even Leonard
She would like Buddy
even if he is malting
and is a little
long in the tooth

I put on Pachelbel
Canon in D
don't understand that, either
I remember in '92
standing on a new escalator
in a shopping mall
before I went to Israel
and this music emanates
from the ground floor
it saturates me
comforts me
on my 24 year old legs
I have focus in
the usual hustle
and bustle
I ask the girl,
can I buy the single?
She tells me I can only
buy a compilation album -
I cannot afford it, I'm saving

4 years later my brother
buys an album for
me and a fiancee -
not Jackie, someone else -
and I repeat the song
to remember him and her
Buddy will soon pass
then me
and I wonder of the
fighting between brothers
and lovers
and me and you -
at the waste

Yesterday's horizon
will stay for a few million years
seagulls and German Shepherds
will evolve -
but Pachelbel
and Albinoni
and Tchaikovsky -
they will not change
And though we too
shall go,
our houses demolished
gravestones covered
poems forgotten,
somewhere -
they will know us, too

they will know
