The Goal (1998, 2006, 2019)

Post by jarkko »

Back in 1998, 21 years ago, Leonard sent me his poem The Goal and asked me to post it on The Leonard Cohen Files. (https://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/goal.html)
In 2006 the poem was included in Book of Longing
THE GOAL

I can´t leave my house
or answer the phone.
I´m going down again
but feeling no pain.

And that´s the great change
and mercy to boot ---
the enemy´s dead
and I don´t have to shoot.

But as for the fall:
it was writ long ago
and I can´t stop it now ---
I´m rain and I´m snow.

And I settle at last
on the ground of my soul
in shapes of the past
and shapes that unfold.

I sit in my chair
and I look at the street --
the enemy´s gone
and his absence is sweet!

I move with the leaves
I shine with the chrome
I´m almost alive
I´m almost at home.

But please do not follow
I´ve nothing to teach:
except that the goal
falls short of the reach.

Thanks Jarkko, I'm currently listening on repeat. It's profound. Humbled and honoured, and grateful that gifts from Leonard aren't over yet.
It's interesting to see the evolution of the lyrics from the poem. Leonard's work was never done.

The "new" lyrics are perfectly translated into Russian by Sergey Gorskiy: https://vk.com/topic-815574_2493138?post=820

Yes, good one, Citizen Kane and thanks for the link, Maarten 8)

I posted a similar quote in the Music Section a few days ago -
B4real wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2019 7:17 am .... after watching and listening to The Goal, to my ears it's the same version as in the recent ©2018 Leonard Cohen (P)2018 Penguin Books Ltd Book of Longing audio release but set to a musical background.

Of course, this new release takes things to another level – love it!
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to B4real ~ me
