Usually Tom is doing this job, but he is not showing up : I am sure many wants to help, but at first sight your question does not seem to relate to Leonard Cohen's music. Or if it is, are you talking about "In my secret life"?

Could you be more precise?

did leonard cohen not originally sing "woke up this morning" the cover of which is used on the sopranos as the theme song.

i was led to believe that he did. i looked briefly on the net and it seemed to back this up. am i wrong? i hope that i'm not, b/c then i'd feel stupid.

i was looking for info about an album that it would be off of, when he wrote it, etc...

*long sigh*

if you tried to search up this song (which, as you said, is by alabama 3) on some kind of downloading service, there are a lot of morons who either don't know who sings what or they are trying to screw around with you. i've seen so many songs with incorrect artist information, and i've seen the one which you've described. so, the song, "woke up this morning," is by alabama 3, and NOT leonard cohen, and it is the theme song to "the sopranos," which is one of the greatest shows ever created, but sorry, has nothing to do with leonard.

The Soprano theme was admittebly influenced by Democracy by Leonard Cohen. You can find the song on The Future (1993), More Best Of Leonard Cohen (1997), or The Essential Leonard Cohen (2002).
Further ~ I did not hear Alabama 3' song, so I can't say is it actually connected to "Democracy" or is that some other "Soprano theme". But the influence is confirmed in many internet and printed sources.

Few articulate the truth as poignantly and astutely as he does; and he is prescient. At the time of its release, people thought "Democracy" was one hell of a grim tune. As with many of his songs, odds are good that ten or twenty years later some other artist will reintroduce it or rip it off successfully into pop culture (i.e. The Sopranos theme).
From interview with Anjani, Leonard's collaborator.

Also, founded thru google, this is how someone describes Alabama 3's music:
Alabama 3: Exile on Coldharbour Lane, La Peste, Power in the Blood (unique stuff; think ‘Honky Tonk Woman’-era Stones remixed by Armand Van Helden with lyrics by Hunter S. Thompson and vocals by Leonard Cohen and you might be kinda close)

This is not Leonard Cohen's song!

Woke Up This Morning
by Alabama 3
Album: Soprano Soundtracks

I'm gonna take you down
Deep down to the front lines

You woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun,
Mama always said you'd be
The Chosen One.

She said: You're one in a million
You've got to burn to shine,
But you were born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.

You woke up this morning
All that love had gone,
Your Papa never told you
About right and wrong.

But you're looking good, baby,
I believe you're feeling fine,(shame about it),
Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes.
Chorus
You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes

You woke up this morning
The world turned upside down,
Thing's ain't been the same
Since the Blues walked into town.
But you're one in a million
You've got that shotgun shine. (shame about it)
Born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.
You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes

When you woke up this morning everything you had was gone. By half past ten your head was going ding-dong.
Ringing like a bell from your head down to your toes,
like a voice telling you there was something you should
know. Last night you were flying but today you're so low
- ain't it times like these that make you wonder if
you'll ever know the meaning of things as they appear to
the others; wives, mothers, fathers, sisters and
brothers. Don't you wish you didn't function, don't you wish you
didn't think beyond the next paycheck and the next little
drink? Well you do so make up your mind to go on, ‘cos
when you woke up this morning everything you had was gone.

woke up this morning,
woke up this morning,
woke up this morning,
You wanna be the Chosen One.

woke up this morning,
woke up this morning,
woke up this morning,
You got yourself a gun.

This is it! With him there is often a surprise laying behing the obvious. :) Thanks a lot Dinah to have originate the question that bring this info. It is always a fascination to me to see the inspiration Leonard Cohen gives to other artists.

aahh, and now the mystery is solved.

i wondered why finding information about it was so scarce and why it didn't seem to be atached to any album.

well, kudos to alabama 3 for recording such a wonderful song.

sorry about the leonard cohen mistake.
