What next after Essential Cohen 1&2?

Postby Gilesimp » Sun Sep 15, 2013 12:59 am

Hi folks,
Being brought up in a house with Dylan, Beatles, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell etc. playing all the time on my dad's record player, I guess it was inevitable LC would be in that mix. As a result I've got (and love) Essential LC 1&2.
It's all good stuff but what I really love is disc 1 and in particular the early songs, Suzanne, Partisan, Guests etc.
While I remember, The Partisan took on a more tangible sense of feeling/emotion after visiting the Jersey War Tunnels, makes me crumble inside when listening to that song, astonishingly good.
So the question here is, if I like the early stuff, what albums are recommended to listen to?
I'm probably the only person on here who has only listened to the compilation, good though it is.
I recall my dad saying 'songs of love and hate' might fit the bill.
Any recommendations?

Cheers, Giles

Songs of Love and Hate is very well regarded; it's kind of dark, but if that doesn't bother you, go for it. Personally, I really like Recent Songs. It's got some excellent stuff and it's "early" in the sense that his voice hadn't really begun to deepen and he hadn't discovered the synthesizer yet. I find it very lyrical.

Thanks for that.
Does it have any tracks that I would know from Essential Cohen?

Hi Giles, and welcome to the forum!

Only "Famous Blue Raincoat" on disc 1.... but in Australia it is sold as a 3CD set and "Love Calls You By Your Name" is on disc 3.
And Helen is right IMO about Recent Songs. It is my favourite studio album. You could actually start from the beginning with Songs Of Leonard Cohen (remastered 2007) and work your way from then to now :)

But look above you at the top of the page and click on the link (or here) to http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/ then click on the left hand side on 'Song Index".
A lot of questions you may have about Leonard's songs and much, much more in the other sections will be answered!

Hi Giles,

Here's the answer - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Essent ... nard_Cohen

Tracks 1–5 are from Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967).
Tracks 6–7 are from Songs from a Room (1969).
Track 8 is from Songs of Love and Hate (1971).
Tracks 9–11 are from New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974).
Track 12 is from Recent Songs (1979).
Tracks 13–15 are from Various Positions (1984).
Tracks 16–18 are from I'm Your Man (1988).

Disc two

Tracks 1–3 are from I'm Your Man (1988).
Track 4 is from Cohen Live (1994).
Tracks 5–9 are from The Future (1992).
Tracks 10–13 are from Ten New Songs (2001).

Giles - The most logical thing to do if you like early Leonard is indeed to listen to the albums in sequence, namely:

Songs of Leonard Cohen
Songs From a Room
Songs of Love and Hate
New Skin For the Old Ceremony
Death of a Ladies Man
Recent Songs

You can either buy the albums individually (approx. £3.00 each on Amazon or in Fopp Records) or buy "The Complete Studio Album Collection" for about £25.00 which is remastered and includes all of the studio albums up to and including "Dear Heather" (but not "Old Ideas", which was released later).

Good stuff, thanks for all the information.
Yes, looks like the first few albums LC made in the late 60's are the ones i'm after.
Following on from that ill work my way through until I hear too much synthesiser, but then again but then I may just love that too!
Having said that, I did listen to some of the most recent albums on spotify and really like that too. Think i'll just have to get stuck in.
Thanks again, Giles

If the synthesizer is too much for you, at least many of them are also available in excellent versions with a live band.
