It 's surely a con?... I've just rubbed my fingers over a wine glass half-filled with water, and ut doesn't make any sound whatsoever!

John it does work, I used to do it some time ago!

I don't know if you read my post from the link above. If not, here it is below:

It actually reminds me of what some friends and I used to do in hotels many years ago when we went out for a drink. One of us would run our wet finger around the rim of our glass and make a similar sound but we wouldn't look at what we were doing so no one knew where this reverberating resonance came from. The finer the crystal glass the higher the note but it alters with the volume of drink in the glass. It still works on beer glasses but gives a very base sound and is much harder to do. A couple more friends would join in to triple the sound and add different notes. Eventually, we were exposed but it was such good fun. I can still do it now!

btw ..... he's much better than we ever were :)
An additional note to the above quote is that your finger must not be too wet or too dry. Also varying amounts of pressure produces different notes. Practice will make perfect!
(I'll bet you were trying to do it without wetting your finger) ;-)

interesting but for me the sound is akin to fingernails being scraped over a blackboard.
